THE SHORT ANSWER

First find out whether the same display works through a documented direct laptop connection. Then add the dock back, changing one component at a time. A successful direct test narrows the problem to the dock route; it does not prove that the dock itself is broken. If the hardware path is established, move to the Windows-specific controls.

Before you unplug anything

Stop if a connector is damaged or equipment shows signs of liquid, smoke or burning. Do not open a power supply. Save work, note the current cable positions and follow the manufacturer’s power and connection instructions; this guide does not prescribe one reset procedure for every dock.

Write down the exact laptop, dock revision, monitor, cable and output port. If the setup worked yesterday, note what changed. A new cable, different socket and software update are separate changes, so do not test all three together.

Build a baseline with one monitor

  1. Choose one display: disconnect the second screen and optional adapters so you can identify the path you are checking.
  2. Match the monitor input: select the HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C input actually used. Record that input name.
  3. Check the documented direct route: if the laptop supports the monitor’s input through a known suitable cable, bypass the dock and observe the result.
  4. Restore the dock route: keep the same monitor and intended display mode. Use the dock’s specified laptop input, host cable and power supply.
  5. Change one part: try another documented output or known suitable cable only after recording the previous outcome.

For example, the TS4 socket labelled Computer is the laptop connection; a downstream socket has a different role. Its official manual shows the port roles. Use the manual for your own model instead of transferring that label to every dock.

These observations guide the next check; they are not a remote hardware diagnosis. Do not buy a replacement based on one failed combination.

Check the capability, not the connector shape

A USB-C plug fitting the laptop is not evidence of video support. The host port, cable and display input must support the intended path. Charging or a working USB mouse can coexist with an unsupported video route. Use the USB-C and Thunderbolt comparison to identify the relevant specification.

If the dock uses DisplayLink, record that separately: its software and permission checks differ from native video. The display-path guide explains the distinction.

A second screen can expose a different limit

Check the host’s native display count and the dock’s simultaneous output table. On WD22TB4, Dell documents that HDMI and MFDP USB-C cannot carry video at the same time. Both sockets can be present without forming a usable two-screen pair. See the scoped Dell compatibility chart.

For a MacBook Air, first check the chip-specific display limit; the M3 arrangement has additional lid requirements. A splitter repeating one signal is also different from two independent desktops.

Move to software checks with a useful record

When the physical route is documented, use the Windows 11 detection, layout and driver checklist for OS-specific controls. This page deliberately stops short of repeating those instructions.

For support, record: exact models and dock revision; OS version; host and dock ports; monitor inputs; cables; requested modes; which direct and dock tests succeeded; and when the failure began. Keep serial numbers and account credentials private. That evidence is more useful than repeatedly buying adapters.
