THE KNOW-HOW

Laptop, dock and monitor compatibility

Inspect documented host, dock and monitor compatibility, including Dell Latitude 7450 and WD22TB4 output-pair restrictions.

Compatibility has several independent parts

A useful compatibility answer names the laptop, the dock revision, the monitor input and the requested display mode. USB-C describes a connector, so the same-looking socket might carry native video, Thunderbolt, USB data or charging. The output labels on a dock matter just as much: two visible connectors can share one display group, and some pairs cannot be used simultaneously.

Use these guides to identify a documented restriction before purchasing an adapter. The Dell guide separates the WD22TB4 HDMI/MFDP exclusion from the laptop’s own display support. The XPS guide identifies specific model and graphics differences rather than treating the entire product family as one machine. Our MacBook and Dell monitor guide explains why a USB-C video input and a DisplayPort-out socket do not automatically create two independent Mac desktops.

Power delivery is a separate check. A dock can pass video while charging below the workload requirement; a laptop can charge through a connection that carries no video. Read the manufacturer display and charging tables together. When your model or mode is absent, the correct outcome is an unresolved compatibility question, not a guessed recommendation. The evidence register preserves the source behind each active planner rule.
