The port shape does not tell you. Check the icon beside the port, the laptop maker's spec sheet for the exact model and configuration, and the system information tool. The answer decides whether a Thunderbolt dock gets full bandwidth and how many screens one cable can carry.

A lightning-bolt icon usually marks Thunderbolt; a DisplayPort icon marks video output; a battery or plug icon marks charging. Markings are optional, so a missing icon proves nothing. Ports on the two sides of one laptop can differ.
Confirm on the spec sheet
Search the maker's support page for your exact model number, not the product family. Look for Thunderbolt 4/5, USB4 40Gbps, DisplayPort Alt Mode and Power Delivery on each port. Every Apple silicon MacBook port is Thunderbolt/USB4; Apple's port guide shows which is which.
Check in the operating system
| System | Where to look |
|---|---|
| macOS | System Information > Thunderbolt/USB4 |
| Windows | Device Manager > System devices or Universal Serial Bus controllers for a USB4 or Thunderbolt entry; maker's Thunderbolt Control Center app if installed |
Then compare with USB-C vs Thunderbolt and run the connection planner with your exact laptop.
