Dell’s WD19S guide caps charging at 90 W for Dell systems when the dock uses its 130 W adapter, 130 W for Dell systems with the 180 W adapter, and 90 W (USB Power Delivery 3.0) for non-Dell laptops. If the laptop needs more than that, it may not charge or will show an undersized-adapter alert. Dell says systems that need more than 130 W must also use their own adapter. Before anything else, check that the dock is on its own Dell adapter and that the cable LED is lit. Then run Dell’s dock reset: unplug the cable and AC, hold the power button for 30 seconds, reconnect AC, wait for three LED blinks and redock. Dell KBs also cover three model-specific cases: Precision 7000-series laptops need a WD19DC/WD19DCS or their own adapter; some Latitude and Precision models trip over-voltage protection when both WD19DC cables are plugged in while the laptop is off; and some 2023 Latitude and Precision BIOS versions show a wattage alert and charge poorly until the BIOS is updated. Manufacturer documentation · Not physically tested by NYBreaking1. Which WD19 docks this page covers
This page follows Dell’s WD19S user guide and Dell Support knowledge-base articles on WD19-family charging. It is not a claim that NYBreaking physically tested any dock or laptop.
- Single-cable docks: Dell Dock WD19 / WD19S (USB-C) and Dell Thunderbolt Dock WD19TB / WD19TBS.
- Dual-connector docks: Dell Performance Dock WD19DC / WD19DCS, which have two USB-C connectors held together magnetically.
- If the laptop charges but the monitors stay dark, use Dell WD19 not detecting monitors. For other brands and cross-dock wattage checks, use dock not charging laptop. For purchase limits and port roles, see the Dell WD19S profile.
2. Check Dell’s power ceilings first
From the WD19S user guide Docking specifications table:
- Dell systems: 90 W to the laptop when the dock uses the 130 W AC adapter, or 130 W when it uses the 180 W adapter.
- Non-Dell systems: 90 W through USB Power Delivery 3.0. An HP, Lenovo or other non-Dell laptop that ships with a higher-wattage adapter can therefore charge slowly or only hold its level under load.
- Check which adapter came with your dock. The dock and adapter are sold in different bundles, and the 130 W and 180 W adapters give different charging ceilings for Dell laptops.
- Dell’s symptoms table says computers that need more than 130 W must also be connected to their own power adapter to charge and run at full performance.
3. Dell’s official fixes for adapter and charging alerts
From the WD19S user guide Symptoms and solutions table:
- BIOS shows the AC adapter as “Not Installed” while the Type-C cable is connected: make sure the dock is connected to its own 130 W or 180 W adapter, check that the cable LED is on, then disconnect and reconnect the Type-C cable.
- “You have attached an undersized power adapter to your system”: make sure the dock is connected properly to its own adapter. Then power-cycle in Dell’s order: disconnect the Type-C cable, remove the dock’s power adapter, reconnect the adapter before reconnecting the Type-C cable to the laptop. Systems needing more than 130 W also need their own adapter.
- Undersized-adapter warning and the cable LED is off: Dell says the docking connector has disconnected from the laptop’s USB port. Reconnect it, wait at least 15 seconds, then dock again.
- Cable LED is off after connecting: make sure the WD19S is on AC power and connected to the system, then disconnect and reconnect.
- Both WD19DC cables connected but only one LED lights: on a non-Precision system that does not support dual-C docking, Dell says only one of the cables works. The lit cable carries the power, video and data connection.
4. Dock reset, firmware and driver path (Dell KB 000193792)
- Remove the USB-C or Thunderbolt cable from the computer.
- Unplug AC power from the WD19-series dock.
- Hold the dock’s power button for 30 seconds to drain remaining power.
- Plug AC power back into the dock. The LED on the power button should blink three times.
- Reconnect the cable to the computer.
- Run Windows Update. Then use SupportAssist for Business PCs, Dell Command Update (Precision, XPS, Latitude) or Dell Update (Vostro, Inspiron, G-Series) to update the laptop BIOS and the laptop and dock drivers. Dell notes that the dock must be connected during the update so its firmware is detected. Power-cycle the dock again after a firmware update.
5. Model-specific Dell KBs: Precision, WD19DC over-voltage protection and BIOS alerts
- Precision 7560, 7670, 7680, 7760, 7770, 7780 (KB 000219644): these may not charge, may charge intermittently, or may not detect the charger on a single-connector dock (WD19, WD19S, WD19TB, WD19TBS, WD22TB4). Dell calls this an unsupported configuration because these laptops need more power than a single USB-C dock connection supplies. Dell recommends a WD19DC/WD19DCS dock. As a workaround, disconnect the dock, plug the laptop’s own AC adapter into the laptop, reconnect the dock, and confirm it is charging.
- WD19DC/WD19DCS with Latitude 5340/5440/5540, 7340/7440/7640, 9440 or Precision 3480/3580/3581 (KB 000214560): plugging both USB-C connectors into the laptop while it is off, with no other AC input, triggers Over Voltage Protection, and the laptop stops charging even after booting. To recover: turn the laptop off, unplug every USB-C connector, wait at least 10 seconds before reseating the dock’s AC adapter, pull the magnetic dual connector apart, plug in only one connector, turn the laptop on and check charging. Dell says these models support only a single Type-C connector from the WD19DC/WD19DCS.
- Wattage alert at power-on (KB 000216629): some laptops set to auto-power in BIOS show alerts such as “A 7W AC power adapter has been detected…” and do not charge properly with WD19, WD19S, WD19TB, WD19TBS, WD19DC or WD19DCS docks. Dell’s fix is a BIOS update, for example Latitude 5440 BIOS 1.12.0 or later, Latitude 7340 1.11.0 or later, and Latitude 9440 2-in-1 1.8.0 or later. Check the KB for your exact model’s minimum version.
6. Isolation order and limits
- Compare your laptop’s own adapter wattage with the dock ceiling in section 2 (90 W non-Dell; 90 W or 130 W Dell depending on the dock adapter).
- Check the dock’s own Dell adapter and the cable LED. Run the KB 000193792 reset (30-second drain, three LED blinks).
- Update the laptop BIOS and dock firmware with the dock connected. Check KB 000216629 if you see a wattage alert at boot.
- Precision 7000-series: use WD19DC/WD19DCS or the laptop’s own adapter (KB 000219644). Latitude or Precision with WD19DC: use a single connector and follow the over-voltage recovery steps (KB 000214560).
- If the laptop charges from its own adapter but still not from a correctly powered, updated WD19 within the documented wattage, contact Dell Support with the dock model, adapter wattage, laptop model and BIOS version.
