HP’s Thunderbolt Dock G4 white paper starts with four steps when the dock or its peripherals don’t appear in Windows: authorize the dock, unplug and re-plug it, restart the laptop, then do a hardware reset. For the laptop reset, power off, remove AC and USB, and hold the power button for 15 seconds. For the dock reset, undock and unplug its power for 5 seconds. HP also documents several specific causes. Some HP monitors don’t wake from sleep until DP Hot-Plug Detection is set to “Always active”. A 4K monitor on a USB-C-to-HDMI/DP dongle in the dock’s Type-C port may not show video, so use the dock’s DP, HDMI or Thunderbolt port instead. On non-Thunderbolt laptops, 4K@60 needs High Resolution mode in F10 BIOS. For the HP USB-C Dock G5, HP’s data sheet says the laptop’s USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode, and the number of monitors depends on the laptop’s DisplayPort version. Keep G5 firmware current with HP’s Firmware Installer, then use Windows Detect and Win+Ctrl+Shift+B. This page maps HP and Microsoft documentation only. NYBreaking did not physically test this.
Manufacturer documentation · Not physically tested by NYBreaking1. Scope: which HP docks, and “not detected” vs flickering
This page maps HP’s Thunderbolt Dock G4 white paper, HP USB-C Dock G5 data sheet and HP Firmware Installer for Docks guide, plus Microsoft’s Windows display troubleshooting. It is not a physical lab test.
- No image at all (monitor says no signal, or Windows doesn’t list it): stay on this page.
- Image present but flickering, blinking or distorted on a G4: use HP Thunderbolt Dock G4 flickering (SoftPaq display fixes).
- Only the second of two monitors is missing on Windows 11: also see second monitor not detected through a dock. For a brand-neutral checklist, see docking station not detecting a monitor. Dell owners: Dell WD19 not detecting monitors.
2. Check the laptop port and HP’s monitor limits
- USB-C Dock G5: HP’s data sheet says the laptop must support the DisplayPort Alt Mode protocol through its USB-C port. Thunderbolt laptops work with it at USB-C speeds. A USB-C port that only carries data or charging cannot drive dock video.
- G5 monitor support depends on the laptop’s DisplayPort version (data sheet): DP 1.4 with DSC: 3× 4K@60. DP 1.3/1.4: 3× QHD or 2× 4K@60. DP 1.2: 3× FHD, 2× QHD or 1× 4K@60. A data-sheet footnote also says “three displays including the notebook screen”, so treat the laptop’s own graphics limits as the deciding factor.
- Thunderbolt Dock G4: HP’s white paper lists up to four external displays plus the notebook display, depending on the notebook’s video capability, and says the HDMI port tops out at 3840×2160@60Hz.

3. HP’s official G4 steps when the dock or monitors don’t appear
From the Troubleshooting issues section of HP’s Thunderbolt Dock G4 white paper:
- Authorize the dock: the first time a new G4 is connected, you may need to approve the Thunderbolt device in the dialog that appears. You must be signed in as an administrator, and some Thunderbolt security levels may stop the dialog from appearing.
- Unplug and re-plug the dock, then restart the laptop.
- Hardware reset (laptop): power off, remove the AC power cord and all USB cables or devices, and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Hardware reset (dock): undock the G4 and unplug the dock’s power cable for 5 seconds.
- Thunderbolt or USB host controller shows an error code in Device Manager (re-docking too quickly): unplug the dock, wait 20 seconds and re-dock. In rare cases, undock and reboot.
- HP monitor doesn’t wake from sleep or on hot plug: on the monitor’s on-screen menu, go to Input Control → DP Hot-Plug Detection and choose Always active.
- No video on a 4K HDMI/DP monitor connected through a Type-C dongle in the dock’s USB-C port: HP lists this as a known limitation. Connect the monitor to the dock’s DP/HDMI port or its Thunderbolt port instead.
- Non-Thunderbolt laptop, 4K@60 not available: in F10 setup, go to Advanced → System Options and enable “High Resolution mode when connected to a USB-C alt mode dock”, then save.
- Monitors missing after restart or hibernation: HP says USB displays may sometimes not appear after a restart. Re-plug the display or switch between duplicate and extended mode. After hibernation, the G4 can take about a minute to enumerate.
4. HP USB-C Dock G5: firmware updates and what to expect
- HP’s Firmware Installer for Docks guide lists the HP USB-C Dock G5 as supported. The package can install immediately or when the laptop is disconnected. During a disconnected update, the dock’s power light blinks and the dock cannot be connected to a computer. HP says the full update finishes in under 4 minutes.
- HP also warns that during dock firmware installation the user may see the monitor flicker, and the mouse and keyboard may stop responding until it finishes. Wait for the update to complete before deciding the monitors are “not detected”.
- For the G4, the white paper describes the HP One Click Installer and HP Firmware Installer for dock firmware updates. Update laptop BIOS and graphics drivers from HP Support as well.
5. Windows checks Microsoft documents
- Press Windows logo key + P and make sure Extend is selected.
- Go to Settings → System → Display → Multiple displays and select Detect.
- If the setup worked and suddenly stopped, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver, then restart if needed.
- If monitors disappeared after an update, Microsoft suggests rolling back the display driver: Device Manager → Display adapters → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver. If there is no roll-back option, reinstall the driver.
- Microsoft’s basic isolation steps: check cables, try another cable, try the monitor on a different system, and, because docks can cause conflicts, test the monitor directly on the laptop.
6. Isolation order and limits
- Confirm the laptop’s USB-C or Thunderbolt port carries video (G5: DisplayPort Alt Mode) and that you are within HP’s monitor limits for that laptop.
- Authorize the G4 if Windows asks. Unplug and re-plug, restart, then do HP’s laptop and dock hardware resets.
- Update dock firmware (HP Firmware Installer), laptop BIOS and graphics drivers, and let any disconnected G5 update finish.
- Use the dock’s DP/HDMI or Thunderbolt outputs rather than a dongle on its USB-C port for 4K. Enable High Resolution mode on non-Thunderbolt HP laptops. Set HP monitors’ DP Hot-Plug Detection to Always active.
- Windows: Win+P Extend, then Detect, then Win+Ctrl+Shift+B, then roll back the driver. If the monitor works directly on the laptop but never through a correctly updated dock, contact HP Support with the dock model, firmware version and laptop model.
