The U2723QE’s DisplayPort MST daisy-chain feature does not provide two independent extended desktops on macOS. A capable M4/M5 Air still needs separate supported native display paths, such as two direct USB-C video connections or the documented TS4 downstream-port pair.

A chain from laptop to monitor A and then monitor A’s DisplayPort-out to monitor B uses the monitor’s MST topology. The presence of a second physical screen does not guarantee an independent desktop. Dell documents macOS’s MST independent-extension limitation. Changing Display settings cannot add an unsupported topology.
The U2723QE has several USB-C roles. Its video-and-power upstream input is distinct from data-only USB-C sockets. The U3223QE is a separate exact model with its own supplied-cable record. USB-C shape does not identify a video path.

The M4 guide and M5 guide use explicit 4K/60 SDR reference paths. Neither converts the Dell MST chain into a Mac extended-desktop path. If the laptop is M3, follow the separate closed-lid instructions.
A quick wiring check before replacing a monitor
- Confirm both monitors can display a picture independently from the laptop using suitable video cables.
- Write down every socket label in the current chain, especially DP-out versus DP-in and video USB-C versus data USB-C.
- Determine whether the second screen is being fed by an MST chain or its own host/Thunderbolt display path.
- Check the Air’s native count and lid rule; do not troubleshoot an M1/M2 limitation as a defective monitor.
- Choose a supported topology before buying extra HDMI adapters or changing drivers.
For a Windows laptop, MST may be a supported option, but the host bandwidth, DSC support, resolution and monitor settings still need matching. A successful Windows chain is not evidence that the same Mac path supports independent extension.
