A USB-C picture does not prove the laptop is receiving enough charging power, and a charging icon does not prove the cable carries video. Confirm the monitor’s powered upstream port, the cable’s supported capabilities and the laptop’s input needs separately.

The Dell U2723QE and U3223QE reference displays have a USB-C video-and-power input identified as 90W in their documentation. Data-only USB-C sockets have different roles. Follow the label and manual for the exact model; placing a cable in another identical-shaped socket can change what the connection does.
If a dock sits between laptop and monitor, sketch the power path in words. The laptop normally negotiates charging with the device on its host cable; a monitor connected downstream does not automatically raise the dock’s host charging limit. The TS4’s documented host ceiling, for example, is a separate specification from the monitor’s upstream USB-C power capability.
Use a controlled charging check
- Confirm the monitor or dock is on mains power with the correct supplied power equipment.
- Connect the laptop to the documented powered upstream or host port using a suitable specified cable.
- Check the operating system’s reported power state, then compare with the original laptop charger under a similar workload.
- Disconnect unnecessary high-power peripherals temporarily and note whether the symptom changes.
- Consult the laptop’s manual for charging requirements and supported USB-C charging ports. Some workloads need more input than a particular monitor or dock offers.
A falling battery percentage under heavy use does not by itself prove a broken power supply. The negotiated input may be below the workload. Conversely, a charging icon while idle does not prove adequate charging during sustained GPU work.

A charging-only cable cannot be assumed to carry native video, and the biggest wattage on a product page may refer to a peripheral port rather than the host. Read the direction and destination of every power specification. If a connector is damaged or unusually hot, stop using it and seek manufacturer support.
