The chip matters more than the number of sockets on a dock. The M1 (2020) and 13-inch M2 (2022) Air models documented here support one native external display. M3 supports two with its lid closed and additional requirements. M4 and M5 support two alongside the built-in screen. A compatible connection path is still required.

Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Write down the model and chip, then note the macOS version. “MacBook” is not specific enough: an Air and a Pro with a similarly named chip can have different display capabilities.
This guide is about independent external desktops. Mirroring the same image on two panels is a different requirement. A dock advertising “dual HDMI” does not by itself establish that both displays will extend on your model.

These are host limits from Apple. The M2 record is specifically the 13-inch 2022 model; another size or year needs its own source. Closing the lid is not evidence that a one-display host gains a second native output.
Choose the detailed instructions for your model: M3 with the lid closed, M4 direct or TS4 connections, or M5 and its documented display modes. The article for a newer chip does not replace the conditions for an older one.
Choose the connection path before choosing a dock
Native video: start with the documented host limit, then check the dock’s exact model, Mac support table and intended output combination. A supported hub or display chain does not increase the host’s native display count.
Software display: if the native limit does not meet your needs, read the DisplayLink trade-offs. That route requires compatible hardware and software, and may be unsuitable for a restricted work laptop or protected streaming video. Installing DisplayLink software does not turn an ordinary hub into a DisplayLink device.
Make the smallest justified shopping list
- Record each monitor’s exact model and input ports.
- Choose the resolution and refresh rate you need on each screen.
- List the cables and adapters you already own.
- Check whether the laptop can use a direct connection before adding a dock.
- If a dock is needed, verify the complete route: host port → dock input → dock output → cable → monitor input.
A second cable can sometimes be enough; sometimes the constraint is the host’s native display limit. Those are different problems, so buying a more expensive dock is not a universal fix.
What this guide does not establish
We have not physically tested these setups. This first release does not certify a particular dock, cable or monitor combination, and it does not measure heat, latency, charging under load or long-term stability. The finder evaluates only its named component-documented paths; other combinations remain unverified.
For a specific purchase, compare the manufacturer’s compatibility table and return policy, and ask the vendor about any unresolved exact-model question. For M3, use our closed-lid setup checklist before assuming a dock is required.
