THE SHORT ANSWER

If a dock worked before an update and fails after it, assume something in the software chain changed: a graphics, Thunderbolt/USB4, network or dock driver, or the Windows build itself. Power-cycle the dock and sign in, check whether Windows still lists the dock, then roll back the driver that changed. Next, install the laptop maker's current BIOS and drivers and any dock firmware. Uninstall the Windows update only as a last, temporary step.

Do the five-minute checks first

  1. Shut down the laptop (do not just close the lid). Unplug the dock's power adapter and the Thunderbolt cable. Reconnect the power adapter first, then the cable. That is the order Dell gives for its WD22TB4.
  2. Start the laptop, sign in and unlock it, then reconnect the dock. With Kernel DMA Protection on, Windows can hold back peripherals whose drivers do not support DMA remapping until an authorized user signs in or unlocks the screen.
  3. Use the dock's own Thunderbolt cable and try the laptop's other Thunderbolt or USB4 port.
  4. If only the screens are missing, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver, then restart.

If the dock works but drops out every few minutes, use the dock keeps disconnecting checklist, which covers power-saving settings.

Check whether Windows still sees the dock

  • USB4 page: on USB4-capable PCs running Windows 11 build 22621.1778 (KB5026446) or later, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > USB > USB4 Hubs and Devices. The page only appears when the PC has a USB4 host router. If the dock is listed there, the link is up and the fault is further down the chain, such as display, USB or network drivers.
  • Device Manager: look for warning icons under Display adapters, System devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers and Network adapters.
  • Windows notifications: messages such as "Display connection might be limited" point to a port, cable or Alternate Mode problem. Microsoft lists these in its USB-C troubleshooting page.
  • Thunderbolt Control Center: Intel states it was designed for Windows 10 and is not compatible with Windows 11, so an empty or missing Control Center on Windows 11 does not on its own mean the dock failed.

To confirm the port really is Thunderbolt or USB4, see how to check for a Thunderbolt or USB4 port.

Roll back the driver that changed

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note which driver and quality updates were installed on the day the dock stopped working.
  2. In Device Manager, open the matching device (often the display adapter, USB4 or Thunderbolt controller, or the dock's Ethernet adapter), go to Properties > Driver and select Roll Back Driver. You need administrator rights. Microsoft notes that if a problem started after a Windows Update, reinstalling the previous driver often resolves it.
  3. If rollback is greyed out, uninstall the device, restart, and let Windows reinstall it.
  4. Reconnect the dock and test screens, USB and Ethernet separately.

Then update in the laptop and dock makers' order

  1. Install the laptop maker's current BIOS and its graphics, chipset and Thunderbolt/USB4 drivers from the maker's support site or update app. These are often newer than, or matched differently from, what Windows Update installed.
  2. Install the dock maker's firmware and drivers. Dell's WD22TB4 guide, for example, says to make sure the latest BIOS and drivers for both the computer and the dock are installed, and to install the dock's Realtek Ethernet driver if its network port stops working. Our Dell WD22TB4 profile lists the rest of its conditions.
  3. Check that Thunderbolt and USB support are still enabled in the BIOS setup, if the laptop has those options.

If the dock is back but one monitor is missing, continue with second monitor not detected in Windows 11 through a dock. If a 4K screen now runs at 30Hz, see 4K monitor stuck at 30Hz through a dock.

Last resort: uninstall the update

  1. Check Microsoft's Windows release health page for a known issue in your Windows version that matches the symptom.
  2. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. If Windows will not start normally, the same option is in Windows Recovery under Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
  3. Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled, and that removing a security update carries risk. Treat removal as temporary and reinstall once a fixed driver or update is available.
  4. On a managed work laptop, ask IT first. Update and DMA policies may be set centrally.

A dock that is still not recognized on any port after all of this needs the dock maker's support. Report what changed and when. For a Windows monitor problem without a dock, see USB-C monitor not working in Windows 11.
