For a listed M4/M5 Air and compatible USB-C monitors, the TS4 is a documented native option when one host cable is useful. M1/M2 dual external desktops need a software display route. M3 requires its closed-lid conditions for two native screens. Two direct cables may be the best choice if you do not need a dock.
Component documentation · Not physically tested by NYBreakingChoose the display path before the dock
| Your Air | Two native external screens? | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| M1/M2 | No | One native screen, or assess a DisplayLink device |
| M3 | Yes, with Apple’s closed-lid conditions | Check macOS, power and external input devices |
| M4/M5 | Yes, alongside built-in display | Two direct cables or a supported native Thunderbolt dock |
These are manufacturer display-count rules, not scores from owned hardware. Your exact screen mode and wiring still need checking. The Air display guide explains how generation changes the answer.
Four different needs, four different decisions
| Choice | Best for | Not for |
|---|---|---|
| CalDigit TS4 | Listed M4/M5 native dual-display reference paths plus desktop peripherals | Expecting an M1/M2 to gain a second native screen |
| Original Element Hub TB4 | A compatible host needing extra downstream Thunderbolt ports | Workloads requiring more than its documented 60W host ceiling |
| Plugable TBT4-UDZ | A supported host needing built-in HDMI/DP connectors | Using two Mac outputs from the same display group; downstream TB accessories |
| USBC-6950M or UD-ULTC4K | Workflows that intentionally accept DisplayLink | A no-install workplace or an assumption of unrestricted protected video |
The TS4 reference uses one monitor on each downstream Thunderbolt output. Ordinary USB-C data ports are not replacements. The Element row refers to the original Thunderbolt 4 model, not Element 5. The 6950M is an adapter without host charging; compare the full equipment cost instead of treating every product as a charging dock.
How these choices were made
We compare documented host support, output topology, software dependence, charging ceilings and required bundles. We do not rank by commission, claim owned benchmarks or assign invented review stars. “Best for” identifies a use case, not a universal winner. Availability, prices and regional bundles have not been checked, so there are no made-up discounts or in-stock labels.
A no-dock option deserves the same attention: the listed M4 Air direct path and M5 Air direct path use two host video connections. If your two supported monitors and suitable cables already cover the requirement, a dock mainly adds consolidation or other peripherals.
Your final comparison checklist
- Write the exact Air generation and screen size. “MacBook compatible” is too broad.
- Record whether you want one or two external screens and whether the laptop must stay open.
- Match monitor inputs to the dock’s simultaneous output arrangement; note any adapters needed.
- Check the correct power supply, suitable host cable and regional bundle. A used module-only listing is not a complete dock.
- Confirm software policy and protected-content needs if DisplayLink is involved.
Compare the three Thunderbolt dock layouts when built-in video connectors, charging allocation or downstream expansion determine your choice.

M1 MacBook Air (2020, 13.3-inch) documents one native external display up to 6K60 and native DisplayPort over USB-C. Closing the lid does not document a second native external display.
