THE SHORT ANSWER

If screens, USB devices and Ethernet all drop together, the fault is usually upstream: the host cable, the laptop port, dock power or a power-saving state. Rebuild a minimal setup, prove the link, then change one Windows setting at a time.

Build a minimal setup

  1. Shut the laptop down. Unplug the dock's power for 30 seconds, then reconnect power before the laptop.
  2. Connect only the host cable and one monitor. Leave drives, webcams and hubs off.
  3. Use the cable that came with the dock, or a certified Thunderbolt/USB4 cable for a Thunderbolt dock.
  4. Try the laptop's other USB-C port; identical-looking ports can have different capabilities.

If the minimal setup stays connected, add devices back one at a time. The device that triggers the drop is your suspect.

Check Windows power saving

  1. Power Options > advanced settings: set USB selective suspend to Disabled and PCI Express Link State Power Management to Off, then test.
  2. Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers: on USB Root Hub entries, clear "Allow the computer to turn off this device".
  3. If drops happen only after sleep, note it; that points to power-state handling rather than a cable.

Change one setting per test so you know what fixed it, and revert settings that made no difference.

Update in the right order

Install the laptop maker's BIOS, chipset, Thunderbolt/USB4 and graphics drivers first, then the dock maker's firmware. Windows Update alone may not carry dock firmware. Windows may also show a USB-C notification when a cable or port is limiting the connection; Microsoft's USB-C page explains each message.

If only video flickers while USB stays up, go to monitor flickering through a dock instead.
