In Windows 11, first distinguish a missing display from a detected display using the wrong layout. Check Windows + P and Settings → System → Display, then follow the branch that matches the symptom. If the direct cable or dock route has not been checked, start with physical fault isolation; software settings cannot add missing video capability.

This checklist handles Windows controls and software symptoms. If you do not yet know whether the display works directly, run the dock and cable fault-isolation checks first, then return with the result.

Note the Windows build, graphics adapter and dock revision. Record error codes rather than paraphrasing every message as “USB-C not working.” Keep serial numbers private.
Check the desktop layout and detection
- Press Windows + P. Choose Extend if you need independent desktops. Duplicate intentionally shows the same image.
- Open Settings → System → Display. Look for the external screen, use Identify where available, and check how the displays are arranged.
- If the screen is missing, open the multiple-displays controls and use Detect. Record whether Windows adds the screen, rather than repeating the action without a changed connection.
- If the screen is detected, select it and check that the requested resolution and refresh rate are supported by the complete path. Change one setting at a time.
Detect does not turn a data-only USB-C port into a video output. If the screen remains absent, take the result back to the physical-path observation table.

Use the exact USB-C warning as a clue

Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting page separates these notifications. Match the actual message; do not assume every one calls for a new graphics driver.
If a previously working display stopped
Save your work. Microsoft documents Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B as a graphics-driver reset that can help in some cases, followed by a restart if needed. It is a troubleshooting attempt, not a compatibility test.
If the failure began after a graphics update, record its date and current driver version. Follow Microsoft’s display-driver guidance or the laptop manufacturer’s instructions for any rollback or reinstallation. On a managed laptop, use IT’s process before changing drivers or firmware; avoid generic driver-download utilities.
For a sleep-only failure, record whether a restart restores the same connection and which dock firmware is installed. That gives the vendor a reproducible symptom without claiming that one reset fixes every dock.
Know what you have established
A successful settings change establishes only the behavior you observed on that configuration. It does not verify every port pair or a higher refresh rate. The Latitude 7450 example in our planner uses its documented ports and exact Dell U2723QE displays; it is not a pass for all Windows laptops.
- Layout fixed: save the selected screen arrangement and mode.
- Direct works, dock fails: continue with the dock-route fault tree.
- Requirement is unsupported or unknown: identify the missing specification before buying.
- Still unresolved: send support the model, OS, driver, firmware, error and successful/failed test record.
Evidence you can inspect
Select Extend when independent desktops are needed; isolate adapters and test a known suitable cable and display.
