For documented two-screen Mac configurations, connect one display from Group 1 and one from Group 2. Four rear video sockets do not establish four independent displays on a Mac.
The output-group rule
Plugable’s display matrix separates Thunderbolt/USB4 operation from USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode operation. For the documented Mac pairs, the critical instruction is one connection from each output group. HDMI plus HDMI, DisplayPort plus DisplayPort or a mixed connector pair can be described, but both displays must not use the same group.
Record the group as well as the connector type. A photo of the rear labels is more useful for identifying a mistaken pair than a report that two cables fit. The number of sockets is a catalogue attribute, not a host display allowance.
Check the exact Mac and lid condition
The manufacturer distinguishes base M1/M2, base M3, base M4 and Pro/Max configurations. Its M3 guidance requires the closed-lid arrangement and the appropriate operating-system version. Use the Apple host record alongside that dock instruction; an M3 Air and an M3 MacBook Pro do not have identical minimum-OS wording.
A Thunderbolt dock of this kind does not use DisplayLink to bypass the native screen allowance. Installing DisplayLink software will not convert its native ports into DisplayLink outputs. NYBreaking has not yet promoted this dock to an exact positive reference path.
Windows bandwidth is another condition
Plugable documents larger Windows display arrangements only with specified host capabilities, including DP 1.4, HBR3 and DSC for its four-4K/60 example. That example is outside our two-screen planner and cannot be generalized to every Thunderbolt or USB4 machine.
USB-C fallback has its own limits. Some Thunderbolt 3 hosts expose only one display stream; a USB-C-only host must provide the relevant native video. Identify the actual laptop and port before deciding whether this dock solves a display problem.
Workloads the manufacturer excludes
The current support article does not promise refresh rates above 60 Hz and excludes HDR and adaptive-sync/variable-refresh use. It also distinguishes active DisplayPort conversion from unsupported passive adapters. These are useful reasons to avoid selecting this model solely because a gaming monitor has a matching socket.
The manufacturer does not list USB-C or Thunderbolt monitors as a supported direct display-output path for this model. A monitor that also offers HDMI or DisplayPort must be evaluated through that chosen input, rather than assuming every USB-C socket on a dock carries video.
Build a complete proposed route
Confirm the host protocol, model and operating system; select one output from each required group; identify both monitor inputs and cable directions; and verify the power supply and host cable in the offered bundle. Check charging against the actual laptop rather than treating the dock’s name as a power specification.
Use the manufacturer’s output matrix as the evidence source. A source-supported possible route remains a candidate until the exact configuration and current rules have been checked; we have not physically tested its behavior.
