The M4 MacBook Air supports two external displays alongside its built-in screen, so the dock decides whether you get two extended desktops. A Thunderbolt dock with two native video paths, whose maker lists base M4 dual-display support, works within Apple's limits. A USB-C MST dock mirrors the second screen on macOS. A DisplayLink dock works but needs its app and Screen Recording permission. Two direct cables need no dock at all.
Manufacturer documentation · Not physically tested by NYBreakingWhat Apple documents for the M4 Air
- Up to two external displays at the same time, in addition to the built-in display.
- Two displays: up to 6K at 60Hz or 4K at 144Hz each. One display: up to 8K at 60Hz, 5K at 120Hz or 4K at 240Hz.
- Closing the lid does not add a third external display.
- A supported hub or daisy chain can carry two displays over one Thunderbolt port, but it does not raise the maximum.
For how this differs from M1, M2, M3 and M5 models, see MacBook Air dual monitors by chip.
Dock types compared for two extended screens
| Dock type | Two extended screens on an M4 Air? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Thunderbolt 4/5 dock with two video-capable outputs | Yes, within Apple's limits | The maker's Mac table lists base M4 (not only Pro/Max) for dual displays |
| USB-C MST dock ("dual HDMI" from one USB-C) | No: the second screen mirrors | macOS does not support MST for independent extended displays |
| Thunderbolt dock with MST output groups | Only the documented pairs | Use one output from each group, as in our Plugable TBT4-UDZ profile |
| DisplayLink dock | Yes, through software | DisplayLink Manager plus Screen Recording permission; protected video may be limited |
| Single-video USB-C hub | One screen per hub | Connect the second monitor directly to the other Thunderbolt port |
If you already bought a dock and both screens show the same image, read why a MacBook mirrors two monitors through a dock.
A documented example: CalDigit TS4
CalDigit lists base M4 and M5 Macs among the hosts that can run dual displays from the TS4, and its knowledge base says M4 and M5 MacBook Air models support dual extended monitors through a CalDigit Thunderbolt dock. The documented wiring options are:
- One monitor on the TS4's DisplayPort output and one on a spare downstream Thunderbolt 4 port (with a USB-C video adapter if needed).
- Two USB-C or Thunderbolt monitors on the two downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports.
The TS4's other USB-C and USB-A ports are data-only, so a monitor plugged into them will not light up. CalDigit's FAQ also lists up to 4K 60Hz per screen for dual monitors on hosts other than M1 Pro/Max/Ultra, which is lower than Apple's 6K ceiling for the Mac itself. Check the dock maker's current table if you want two 5K or 6K screens. Our M4 Air dual-monitor setup walks through one exact TS4 route, and the CalDigit TS4 profile lists its conditions.
Checklist before you buy a dock
- Confirm the chip in Apple menu > About This Mac. "M4" must be the Air's chip, not a later or earlier one.
- Ask whether you need a dock at all: two monitors on the Air's two Thunderbolt ports is the simplest documented route.
- On the dock's spec page, find a Mac table that names base M4 for two displays. "Mac: mirror only" or MST wording means one extended screen at most.
- Note the dock's dual-display resolution and refresh limit, and whether HDMI adapters cap the mode.
- After connecting, open System Settings > Displays and make sure neither screen is set to mirror.
