BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

The WD22TB4 cannot use its HDMI and MFDP USB-C sockets for video simultaneously. Choose a documented output combination and check the host, firmware and charging context separately.

The output pair to rule out immediately

Dell documents that the rear HDMI and multifunction DisplayPort USB-C connection are multiplexed: only one can provide video at a time. Using both is therefore not a valid two-display plan, even when each screen works individually. The USB-C socket may retain USB functionality while HDMI is active; that does not restore its simultaneous video path.

This is a specific port restriction, not evidence that the whole dock is defective. Record the connector names before replacing a monitor or cable. The planner’s negative reference case covers this exact HDMI-plus-MFDP request.

What the alternative diagrams do and do not prove

Dell’s manual lists other dual-display pairs, including two DisplayPort connections and arrangements involving the downstream Thunderbolt ports. Those diagrams describe dock capabilities. Host bandwidth, operating-system support, requested screen modes and cable direction still determine which arrangement applies to an actual laptop.

Do not turn a generic multi-display table into a blanket green badge. This record does not certify every Dell laptop, and an adapter added between the dock and a monitor becomes another component to verify.

A Mac needs the Apple-host topology

Dell’s Apple-host support article distinguishes native Thunderbolt paths from MST-based combinations. It describes arrangements using the dock’s Thunderbolt connection for one or both monitors. Two video sockets that share an MST arrangement can mirror on macOS instead of supplying independent desktops.

The Mac chip’s own native display allowance remains a separate rule. Identify the exact Mac model, operating system and lid condition; do not inherit a Windows diagram or assume the dock provides a DisplayLink workaround. This catalogue does not issue a positive WD22TB4-on-Mac verdict.

Power and firmware need their own check

Dell’s Apple-host guidance ties some functionality to firmware context. The catalogue has not resolved a single charging claim for every WD22TB4 and Mac combination, so it does not promise the Dell-laptop wattage to an Apple host. A working image is not proof that the laptop is receiving enough power for its workload.

Check the actual power supply, attached host cable, dock revision and firmware against the current support documentation. For a workplace machine, follow the organisation’s approved update route rather than treating a firmware change as a harmless display-menu adjustment.

A practical troubleshooting record

Write down the laptop, operating system, both dock sockets, both monitor inputs and each cable. If the chosen pair is HDMI plus MFDP USB-C, change to a documented alternative only after checking the host’s support. If another pair fails, test the two displays separately to isolate a component without assuming the complete topology is sound.

The WD22TB4 output guide and Apple-host limitations are separate sources for separate questions. No physical test or universal compatibility claim is made here.
