Start with the Air’s native display limit and whether you can accept its lid conditions. M4 and M5 can handle two native external screens; M3 has a documented closed-lid dual-screen arrangement. DisplayLink adds a different software-dependent path, with permissions and protected-video limits that must be understood before purchase.

- Count external screens separately from the built-in laptop screen.
- Check the exact chip and native arrangement in the Air display matrix.
- Try a documented native path if it meets your needs with existing equipment.
- Only then consider software graphics when the native path does not meet a material requirement.
A dock with more sockets does not automatically expand the host’s native display streams. A software-display route is a distinct topology, not a renamed native connection.
Check the permission that applies now
If compatible DisplayLink software is already installed and approved, a restriction on new installations alone should not reject it. The application must still be allowed to run and have the required macOS screen-capture permission. If it needs installation or updating, obtain the relevant permission first.
The finder keeps unknown permissions unknown and does not hide a separately supported native alternative. Protected-content restrictions on macOS also matter if streaming video is part of the intended workload.
