The original Element Hub has one host Thunderbolt connection and three downstream Thunderbolt ports. CalDigit specifies up to 60W host charging; display capability still depends on the exact host and connection.
A hub of downstream connections
The original model provides four Thunderbolt 4 sockets in total: one connects to the computer and three are downstream. It also provides four USB-A data ports. The host socket is not an additional monitor output, so start by identifying the Computer label.
Unlike a dock with built-in HDMI and DisplayPort sockets, this hub uses its downstream connections for a direct supported USB-C or Thunderbolt display, or for a separately suitable video adapter. That difference changes the equipment list and the complete price of a proposed setup.
Read the host column before the resolution headline
CalDigit’s display table separates Thunderbolt/USB4 hosts, USB-C fallback and different Mac families. It describes dual-4K/60 arrangements for supported hosts, but its table is not a promise that every computer with a USB-C connector can supply two independent streams.
For this reason, do not copy a TS4 result to the Element Hub merely because both use Thunderbolt 4. The hub, power supply, monitor adapters and connection paths are different records. No exact Element Hub configuration currently has a positive reference result in this planner.
The 60W number is host charging
CalDigit specifies up to 60W of laptop charging through the host connection. Its listed original bundle includes a 150W power supply, but 150W is not the laptop charging claim. Distinguish the power supply’s overall capacity from the amount available to the host.
If a laptop needs more power for the intended workload, decide whether a separate charger is acceptable. Do not label the display route incompatible solely because a one-cable charging preference is unmet, and do not promise that the battery will stay charged under an untested load.
Check a used or incomplete listing
The official bundle lists the original hub, a 0.8m Thunderbolt 4 host cable, a power supply and power cord. Check those items explicitly in a used listing. The original Thunderbolt 4 Element Hub and Element 5 should not share a record, even when a seller shortens both names to Element.
For HDMI or DisplayPort monitors, add only the exact required video adapter and cable after verifying direction and mode. For a monitor with a suitable direct USB-C video input, assess that path first instead of automatically adding a converter.
When the smaller hub is worth investigating
This design can be relevant when the task needs flexible downstream connections rather than built-in display connectors. Compare its complete route with direct laptop connections and a dock that already has the desired outputs. Count required adapters and the laptop’s power arrangement, not just the hub’s sticker price.
The original Element Hub specifications provide the source table. This profile does not measure storage speed, thermal behavior or reliability and does not certify an arbitrary combination of downstream devices.
