A native display path does not need DisplayLink software. First check whether direct connections meet the exact host’s display limit. For the reviewed M4 Air + TS4 + U2723QE pair, DisplayLink install permission is not applicable; unknown software permissions do not erase that native option.

Three checks for a restricted work laptop
- Can the host natively drive the number of screens you need with the requested lid state?
- Do the dock’s simultaneous outputs carry the correct independent display signals for that host and OS?
- Do you have matching monitor inputs, video cables and power?
If all three are documented, a DisplayLink-specific install restriction is irrelevant to that video path. It does not mean every peripheral, firmware updater or workplace policy is irrelevant.
Two useful native alternatives
Two direct USB-C connections can serve the selected reference monitors on the reviewed hosts, subject to model-specific conditions. The M4 TS4 alternative uses one host Thunderbolt cable and two downstream Thunderbolt display connections. A generic MST adapter is not interchangeable with that Mac route.
M3 native dual displays require the closed-lid arrangement. Keeping its internal screen active changes the native limit. A more expensive native dock does not remove that restriction.
Already installed is different from allowed to install
If DisplayLink is already approved and compatible, the remaining questions are whether it can run and whether required OS permissions are granted. The finder treats a new-install restriction separately. It also retains protected-video limitations and the exact software-version review requirement.
If a vendor describes a product as driverless, read what that means for its display path. It should not be read as a guarantee that the entire desk never needs firmware, graphics updates or an employer’s approval. Compare the connection choices before shopping.
