The USBC-6950M uses DisplayLink rather than a native MST split. Confirm software approval, the relevant macOS permission and direct HDMI connections before considering it for a two-screen office setup.

The software is part of the connection

Plugable documents two HDMI outputs with a maximum of 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz each. DisplayLink carries the display through USB graphics software rather than relying on the same native output path as an MST adapter. This can make it relevant when a laptop’s native display allowance does not match the user’s office task.

That does not make it a universal bypass. The required software must support the actual operating system and be allowed to run. This site has not validated a complete 6950M-and-monitor path, so the product remains a research candidate.

Check a work laptop before ordering

On macOS, setup requires DisplayLink Manager and the applicable screen-capture permission. Permission to install an application, permission to run it and permission to grant that operating-system access are separate checks. “I can download it” does not answer all three.

Plugable describes Windows driver installation as typically automatic through Windows Update. Automatic installation is not the same as having no software dependency, and a managed laptop may restrict it. If your employer does not permit the necessary software, investigate an evidenced native route rather than purchasing the adapter first.

Use the HDMI outputs as HDMI paths

The manufacturer specifies HDMI-to-HDMI monitor connections and excludes using an HDMI conversion path to a Thunderbolt or USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode display. The adapter’s two HDMI sockets should not be treated as general-purpose replacements for the downstream Thunderbolt sockets on another dock.

Identify the USBC-6950M on the product or listing. The 6950U is a separate model with a different connector arrangement. Record each display’s exact HDMI input and cable; a shared chipset name is not enough to reuse another adapter’s wiring instructions.

Protected video and workload trade-offs

Plugable warns about HDCP-protected playback, and DisplayLink documents protected-video limitations on macOS while DisplayLink screens are connected. If a streaming service or protected training video is essential, resolve that requirement before choosing this path. Do not assume the problem disappears because ordinary desktop windows display correctly.

We do not infer gaming latency, color-work suitability or long-term stability from a maximum resolution. Keep the proposed use to the documented office scenario, then seek separately scoped evidence for demanding workloads.

The minimum equipment and next step

The supplied adapter has its own captive USB-C host lead. It does not provide laptop charging; retain a suitable laptop power arrangement and obtain the appropriate monitor cables. Check the seller’s exact contents instead of assuming a pair of HDMI cables is included.

Start with the model-specific specifications and the DisplayLink versus Thunderbolt guide. Use Apple’s model-specific documentation for native display limits: broad merchant wording must not override the M4 or M5 host rule. A missing permission or unidentified cable remains a reason to investigate, not a green purchase recommendation.
