Apple documents two external displays alongside the built-in display on the 13-inch M5 MacBook Air. The reference plan here connects each Dell U2723QE directly to a separate host port at 4K/60 SDR. A statement that the host can use two displays through one Thunderbolt port does not validate every dock.

What the host specification actually says
| Arrangement | Apple-documented ceiling |
|---|---|
| Two external screens | Up to 6K/60 or 4K/144 |
| One external screen | Up to 8K/60, 5K/120 or 4K/240 |
| Built-in screen | Can remain active |

The upper limits describe the host, not an unconditional promise about a cable, dock or monitor. The finder deliberately uses the narrower recorded path.
A two-cable setup you can inspect
- Identify the exact 13-inch M5 Air and use a supported macOS release.
- Connect host port 1 to monitor A’s USB-C 90W video input with its original Dell C-C cable.
- Connect host port 2 to monitor B in the same way.
- Power both monitors, select the USB-C inputs, then configure two extended 3840 × 2160, 60 Hz displays.
No DisplayLink install permission is required for these native display connections. If you own these exact components, the shopping list can be empty. Keep the laptop screen open for the documented case.
When one host cable matters
Apple also documents two displays over one Thunderbolt port on M5. To use that capability, the dock must expose appropriate independent display streams and support the requested simultaneous modes. We have not transferred the M4 TS4 case to every M5 dock. Check the exact dock revision, downstream outputs and display inputs before buying.
If your monitor or cable is not the reference model, use the missing-information prompts. A cable that charges your laptop is not automatically a video cable. See how to identify a USB-C video path.
Evidence you can inspect
M5 Air supports two external displays alongside the built-in display, including up to two over one Thunderbolt port. This does not certify an arbitrary dock.
