THE SHORT ANSWER

macOS does not support DisplayPort MST, so many USB-C docks that extend two screens on Windows can only mirror them on a Mac. Extending two monitors from one cable needs a Mac that supports two external displays plus a Thunderbolt dock with two video outputs, or a DisplayLink dock with its driver.

Why the dock mirrors instead of extends

Many dual-HDMI USB-C docks create the second output with DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST). Windows can drive MST outputs as separate screens; macOS sends one stream, so both outputs show the same image. The dock is not broken, it is the wrong topology for a Mac.

Apple notes that a supported hub can carry up to two displays over one Thunderbolt port but does not raise the Mac's maximum display count. A base M1 or M2 MacBook Air supports one external display, so no native dock gives it two extended screens.

Check these four things in order

  1. Confirm your Mac model supports two external displays (Apple's display-support page lists each model).
  2. Read the dock's spec page: look for Thunderbolt 3/4/5 and macOS dual-display support, not just "USB-C". Phrases like "Mac: mirror only" or "MST" mean one extended screen at most.
  3. Use the dock's supplied Thunderbolt cable on the host side; a charge-only USB-C cable can power the Mac without carrying both video streams.
  4. In System Settings > Displays, select each display and set Use as to Extended display instead of Mirror.

Your options if the dock is MST

Connect one monitor directly to a second Mac portFree; uses an extra port
Thunderbolt dock with two video outputsNative video; costs more
DisplayLink dockWorks past the native limit; needs a driver and screen-recording permission, and protected video may not play
