M4 and M4 Pro support up to two external displays; M4 Max supports up to four. Apple lists two for base M5, three for M5 Pro and four for M5 Max. A TS4 remains a dual-display dock on a compatible Mac; it does not put every external screen through one host cable.

Apple’s maximum count is conditional on specific resolution and refresh combinations. It is not permission to run every screen at its individual highest advertised mode simultaneously. Closing the lid does not add more native external displays. Confirm the chip in About This Mac before interpreting “Pro” in the laptop product name.
Separate the host sockets from dock outputs
A MacBook Pro’s native HDMI output is a host connection. The TS4’s DisplayPort socket and downstream Thunderbolt sockets are dock outputs sharing the Thunderbolt host link. The TS4 Computer port is its upstream connection; ordinary USB data ports are for peripherals. Use the TS4 port-role schematic to avoid putting a monitor on the wrong USB-C socket.
For a compatible Mac, CalDigit documents two native screens through the TS4. That does not promise three screens through the dock by filling three video-capable sockets. Refer to Apple’s simultaneous display-mode table and CalDigit’s host-compatibility notes together.
A three-screen plan has to start with a capable chip
On an M4 Max or another chip whose native count allows three, one possible source-based arrangement is two supported screens through the TS4 and a third using the Mac’s own HDMI output. This is an inference from the separate host and dock specifications, not an NYBreaking hardware test or an active three-screen finder result.
- Choose three target display modes that Apple permits together for the exact chip.
- Select a supported TS4 two-display arrangement with suitable monitor cables.
- Check the third monitor and HDMI cable against the Mac’s direct HDMI requirements.
- Test each screen individually before combining the arrangement; document the actual modes selected in macOS.
The same purchase will not create a third native display on an M4 Pro. A software display route is a different design with different limitations; review how DisplayLink changes the path before considering it, even though that guide’s worked host examples are Air models.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming an M4 Pro chip supports more screens than base M4 because it has a higher tier name.
- Applying M5 Pro’s three-display allowance to M4 Pro.
- Assuming a USB-C hub offers video through every USB-C socket.
- Treating three dock video sockets as three simultaneous independent Mac outputs.
- Using a dock’s headline resolution without checking the host and combined refresh-rate table.
