THE SHORT ANSWER

A screen that drops out for a few seconds and comes back has usually lost and re-established its video link. Dell lists loose cables, outdated graphics drivers, monitor firmware and Display Stream Compression (DSC) as causes of intermittent blanking on its docks, and says a dock firmware update fixes it on the WD19 and WD22TB4. Plugable lists intermittent black screens among the problems a TBT4-UDZ firmware update can fix. Reseat or swap the cable, update the graphics driver, dock firmware and monitor firmware, then check whether only one screen blanks or the whole dock reconnects.

1. Note what blanks and when

  • One screen only, other dock devices keep working: the video link to that monitor is renegotiating. Start with the cable, the mode and DSC below.
  • All screens, plus the keyboard, mouse or Ethernet on the dock: the whole dock is reconnecting. That points to the host cable, the dock's power or the laptop's Thunderbolt driver; continue with dock keeps disconnecting in Windows 11.
  • Only right after you change resolution, refresh rate or HDR: a brief blank while the monitor switches mode is expected. Dell documents a case where it lasts about 30 seconds (see step 4).
  • Constant rapid flashing rather than a few-second drop: use our monitor flickering through a dock checklist instead.

2. Reseat and swap the video cable

  1. Dell's first check for intermittent blanking on its docks is the cable: confirm it is properly connected and securely plugged in, because loose connections can cause blanking.
  2. Unplug both ends of the monitor cable and the dock's host cable, check for bent pins, and plug them back in firmly.
  3. Swap in a cable rated for the mode you use. Apple notes that a display can go dark if the cable or adapter does not support its resolution and refresh rate. For USB-C, a charge-only cable carries no video at all; see which USB-C cables carry video.
  4. Test the monitor directly on the laptop with the same cable. Apple and Microsoft both suggest removing the dock or adapter from the path to isolate the cause.

3. Check Display Stream Compression and dock firmware

  • Dell: if the monitor keeps blanking for 3 to 4 seconds, DSC may be the cause, because some monitors are not fully compatible with it. Dell says updating the WD19 or WD22TB4 dock to firmware 01.00.36, 01.00.20 or later resolves the issue.
  • Plugable lists intermittent flickering, flashing or black screens among the issues a firmware update for the TBT4-UDZ can fix. The utility runs on Windows only, not on a Mac.
  • Other docks: check the maker's support page for your exact model for a firmware note that mentions black screens or display instability.
  • Also check the monitor maker's site for monitor firmware, as Dell recommends.

4. Mode changes, MST and high refresh rates

  • Dell documents a case where a monitor using MST and DSC on the USB-C MFDP port of a WD19, WD19TB, WD19DC or WD22TB4 only shows a picture again about 30 seconds after the refresh rate changes, on certain Latitude and Precision laptops. Dell's fix is to use the dock's full-size DisplayPort for MST monitors, or turn off MST in the monitor's on-screen menu when using the MFDP port.
  • If blanking happens at a high refresh rate or 4K and stops at a lower mode, the path is near its bandwidth limit. Check the dock's display table; 4K monitor stuck at 30Hz through a dock explains the usual limits.

5. Graphics driver and DisplayLink software

  • Microsoft says flicker in Windows is usually caused by a display driver issue or an incompatible app. Its guidance: if Task Manager flickers along with everything else on the screen, a display driver is probably the cause. Microsoft also suggests pressing Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver, then restarting if that does not help.
  • Install the laptop maker's current graphics driver and BIOS. If the drops started after an update, see Thunderbolt dock not working after a Windows update.
  • DisplayLink docks: Plugable says outdated GPU drivers on Windows can make DisplayLink screens blink off and on or reset. On laptops with two GPUs, update both drivers, and keep the DisplayLink software current.

6. Dock power and the host port
