THE SHORT ANSWER

Start with Windows Extend (Win+P) and Detect, then confirm whether the dock is a Thunderbolt model or a USB-C MST model. Lenovo’s industry-standard dock matrix supports MST extended desktop on ThinkPad Windows hosts; Apple notebooks often lack MST for multi-extend on USB-C docks. On the ThinkPad Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock (40B0), Lenovo documents up to four 4K 60Hz outputs and says a blank DisplayPort or HDMI after you add a Thunderbolt display is fixed by connecting DP/HDMI first, then the Thunderbolt display. If screens fail after sleep or wake, check Lenovo HT507736 and HT515180, then update BIOS, graphics and dock firmware with Lenovo Vantage or Dock Manager.

1. Quick Windows and input checks

  1. Press Windows logo key + P and choose Extend (not Duplicate). Microsoft’s external-monitor guide starts with this Project menu when a second screen is missing or mirrors.
  2. Open Settings > System > Display and select Detect if a connected monitor does not appear. Details for the Windows side are in second monitor not detected in Windows 11 through a dock.
  3. On each monitor, open the on-screen menu and set the input to the exact port you plugged into (DisplayPort, HDMI or USB-C), not Auto if Auto keeps hunting.
  4. Power the dock from its supplied adapter. Lenovo’s Thunderbolt 4 dock user guide says the dock always needs its own power adapter for operation.
  5. Test one monitor at a time on the dock, then both. If a single monitor works direct on the laptop but not on the dock, stay on this page; if it fails direct too, the cable or monitor is the first suspect.

2. Identify the dock type: Thunderbolt vs USB-C MST

  • Thunderbolt 4 Universal / Smart / Workstation docks (for example 40B0): host link is Thunderbolt. Lenovo’s user guide for the Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock lists four video paths: two DisplayPort 1.4, one HDMI 2.1 and one Thunderbolt 4 downstream, and documents up to four external displays at 3840×2160 60Hz when the host supports it. Check the live matrix on lenovo.com/support/docks.
  • USB-C Universal / Smart docks: video usually relies on DisplayPort Alt Mode plus Multi-Stream Transport (MST) to split several outputs. Lenovo’s industry-standard compatibility article states MST extended desktop is supported on ThinkPad Windows hosts; Apple notebooks often cannot multi-extend over MST on USB-C docks (one extend, or multiple clone-only, depending on the dock).
  • Older Thunderbolt 3 docks: same troubleshooting order, but confirm the laptop port is Thunderbolt 3 or 4, not plain USB-C: how to check Thunderbolt vs USB-C.

On a ThinkPad T14-class host, start from the laptop’s documented external-display limit: see ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 (Intel) external display limits.

3. Port order, cables and mux quirks

  1. Use the cable that shipped with the dock in the marked upstream port. Lenovo’s blank-display troubleshooting starts with secure cables and dock power.
  2. On the Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock, if DisplayPort or HDMI goes blank after you connect a Thunderbolt display, Lenovo’s user guide says: disconnect all displays, connect the DisplayPort or HDMI display first, then connect the Thunderbolt display.
  3. If the image flutters, Lenovo says to reseat the display cable so it is firmly connected.
  4. Prefer certified DisplayPort or HDMI cables rated for the mode you want (4K 60Hz needs enough bandwidth). A charge-only USB-C cable on a video path carries no picture.
  5. If one screen blanks for a few seconds and returns while the dock stays up, that is usually a link renegotiation, not a full disconnect: see monitor goes black for seconds through a dock.

4. Drivers and firmware: Vantage, Dock Manager, graphics

  • In Lenovo Vantage (or Lenovo Commercial Vantage on managed PCs), run System Update for BIOS, chipset, Thunderbolt, Intel or AMD graphics and any dock packages listed for your model.
  • Install or update Lenovo Dock Manager for silent dock firmware updates and dock identity: Lenovo documents it at support article HT037099. The Thunderbolt 4 dock user guide also points to lenovo.com/support/docks for the exact driver and firmware package for your dock.
  • After a Windows feature update, Thunderbolt security prompts or driver resets can leave the dock half-enumerated: follow Thunderbolt dock not working after a Windows update.
  • If the whole dock (USB, Ethernet and video) drops and returns, treat it as a host-link problem: dock keeps disconnecting in Windows 11.

5. After sleep or wake: Lenovo known issues

  • HT507736: Lenovo documents that an external monitor may not display after sleep, hibernate, shut down or restart when the ThinkPad is on a dock. Use Lenovo’s article for the current remediation list for your model (BIOS, dock firmware and Windows power settings are the usual starting points).
  • HT515180: On the Thunderbolt 4 Universal Dock and Thunderbolt 4 Workstation Dock, Lenovo documents that displays on HDMI and DisplayPort 6 may not come back when the system wakes from sleep. Check that article for the firmware or connection guidance that applies to your dock revision.
  • After wake, press Win+P once to re-assert Extend, then Detect in Display settings before reseating cables.
  • Power-cycle the monitors (unplug AC for 10 seconds) if they stay in a sleep state with no signal.

6. When it is the laptop or OS limit

  • A USB-C MST dock on a host that does not support MST for independent streams will mirror or light only one screen. Lenovo calls this out for many Apple notebooks on industry-standard USB-C docks; on those hosts Lenovo points to Thunderbolt downstream + DP/HDMI paths on the Thunderbolt 4 Universal Dock for dual display.
  • Even on Windows, the laptop GPU and the dock share a finite number of display pipes. If the ThinkPad already drives the lid plus one external screen at the documented maximum, a second dock output will stay dark until you close the lid or lower resolution or refresh rate.
  • Confirm the host port is the Thunderbolt/USB4 port the dock expects. A Thunderbolt dock on a plain USB-C-only port often loses multi-monitor bandwidth.
  • If only 4K at 30Hz appears, the path is bandwidth-limited: 4K monitor stuck at 30Hz through a dock.
