Native graphics, not DisplayLink
The USBC-MSTH2 takes a video signal from a compatible USB-C host port and distributes it through two HDMI outputs using Multi-Stream Transport, or MST. Plugable describes it as a driverless adapter using the host’s native graphics. There is no DisplayLink installation that turns this particular product into a different kind of adapter.
That makes the host specification the first purchase check. Establish the laptop’s exact USB-C video capability and graphics limits before counting the adapter’s outputs. A data-only USB-C socket cannot supply the native video this adapter needs.
The condition behind dual 4K at 60 Hz
The product’s headline mode depends on a host supporting DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression. Plugable describes a lower dual-1080p/60 capability for DP 1.2 hosts. Identify that distinction in the laptop documentation instead of assuming every recent USB-C machine delivers the advertised maximum.
For an actual desk, write down both monitors’ requested resolution and refresh rate, their HDMI input capability and the cable for each connection. A working single screen does not establish the two-screen bandwidth result. This catalogue has not promoted an exact MSTH2 host-and-cable combination to a positive planner path.
Why the two screens mirror on a Mac
Plugable explicitly distinguishes Windows and ChromeOS extension from macOS behavior. On a Mac, the adapter’s two external outputs do not become independent extended desktops through MST. Changing the arrangement menu cannot add the missing operating-system behavior.
This restriction belongs to this connection technology. It is not a claim that every Mac is limited to one external screen. For example, the M4 Air has different native host capabilities, but it still needs an appropriate connection topology rather than this MST split.
What must be in the bag
The adapter has an integrated host lead and is powered from the connected computer. Plugable lists the adapter in the box and says HDMI cables are not included. Plan two suitable HDMI-to-HDMI cables and confirm the intended monitor inputs before calling the setup complete.
It is a small display adapter, not a substitute for all the connections of a desktop dock. Keep the laptop’s power arrangement and any keyboard, network or storage needs in the cost comparison. Do not buy additional equipment if existing independent laptop outputs already meet the task.
A useful check before buying
Use this sequence: identify the host video port; verify DP version and DSC for the required mode; confirm MST support; identify both HDMI cables; then check the two displays together in the intended layout. If one fact is missing, ask for that fact rather than treating an unknown as compatibility.
