The 10 British Universities with the Most American Students, Ranked

Some American students barter Greek life and GPAs for cobblestone campuses and a degree across the pond.

Awareness of the British university The route is steadily increasing, says Meredith Guthrie, principal consultant at Meritage Advisors, a consultancy that guides prospective American students through college admissions in the United Kingdom.

“The application process for British universities is seen as refreshingly transparent compared to the pressure cooker that students go through for American colleges,” Guthrie told Business Insider.

Admission to university in Britain are more interested in academic ability than in your personal journey or extracurricular activities. The courses are also subject-specific, and many can be completed in three years, she added.

The following rankings – which spotlight British schools with the most American students – are compiled from data published by the British Higher Education Statistics Agency. The data covers the academic year 2024-2025, for all levels of full-time studies.

This concerns students with a permanent address in the US, and not students with American nationality. This also concerns all providers of higher education, not just universities.

Here are the 10 UK universities with the most American students.

10. Royal Veterinary College

Number of full-time students living in the US: 490

Founded in 1791, the Royal Veterinary College is a specialist veterinary school and an affiliated institution of the University of London. It was ranked as the best in the world in veterinary medicine by the QS World University Ranking.

The RVC, whose royal patron is King Charles III, has one campus in London and another further afield in the Hertfordshire countryside.

9. University of the Arts London

With an alumni list with countless well-known names Alexander McQueen according to Jimmy Choo, the University of the Arts London will certainly attract Americans who dream of making it big in the creative industries.

UAL is split into several constituent colleges including Central Saint Martins, the Camberwell College of Arts and the Chelsea College of Arts.

8. King’s College London

King’s College London is considered one of the most prestigious universities in Britain, offering a wide range of courses from dentistry to war studies.

It has five campuses across London, including the Strand Campus, close to the Houses of Parliament and the River Thames.

7. London School of Economics and Political Science

The London School of Economics and Political Science, founded in 1895, topped the Times and Sunday Times’ 2026 UK university rankings.

It was founded for the “betterment of society” and is known worldwide for its study and research in the social sciences.

Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is considered one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

With 126 Nobel Prizes awarded to its members, Cambridge has seen major scientific breakthroughs, including the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. The university says it is welcometalented students from all over the world.”

University College London is one of the best universities in the world according to the QS World 2027 University rankings.

It offers more than 400 undergraduate courses and more than 700 postgraduate research and taught courses.

4. University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451 and has many influential alumni, such as the economist Adam Smith, who pioneered modern economics.

Meredith Guthrie, principal consultant at Meritage Advisors, said Glasgow’s “impressive position in the international rankings and metropolitan location will have an effect in driving interest in potential candidates.”

3. University of Oxford

Number of full-time students living in the US: 1,250

The University of Oxford has long been ranked among the best universities in the world and was named the world’s best university by the University of Oxford Times higher education in the 2026 rankings for the 10th year in a row.

It is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and attracts the best and brightest from around the world.

2. University of Edinburgh

Number of full-time students living in the US: 1,445

Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh has been the birthplace of scientific breakthroughs such as the discovery of the use of chloroform in childbirth and the cloning of Dolly the Sheep.

Like other Scottish universities, it offers four-year bachelor’s degrees — the same length as a U.S. bachelor’s degree — which as a result is “attracting significant American interest,” Guthrie said.

With approximately one in five students at St. Andrews coming from the US, the university has become known for its popularity with Americans.

Founded in 1413, St. Andrews is academically strong and has an active campus life characterized by traditions and a close-knit community.

“St. Andrews has done a phenomenal job in their outreach to American students,” Guthrie said. ‘There is also prestige. St. Andrews is recognisably elite.’
