Spencer Pratt is lashing out at Ryan Reynolds after the actor shared a controversial stance on ’80s nostalgia.
The Canadian star — who plays a U.S. Navy pilot on Apple TV’s Mayday — looked back on the decade as “tumultuous” and traumatic in a recent interview, prompting Pratt to label him an “instrument.”
“What’s interesting is that if you’re far enough away from a certain period, there’s always a beautiful feeling associated with it,” Reynolds, 49, said. Variety.
“It’s almost like soothing all the trauma with puppies and ice cream.”
In his new film, Reynolds’ character builds an unlikely friendship with an eccentric ex-KGB agent (Kenneth Branagh) obsessed with ’80s American culture.
On the red carpet at AMC Lincoln Square in New York City on Tuesday evening, Reynolds – born in 1976 – listed what he believes we often overlook.

Pratt took to X on Thursday to complain about Reynolds’ comments in an interview with Variety
“The ’80s were a brutal, brutal time for people. It was a fucking mess and people forget that. It was a huge struggle,” he explained. ‘Socio-political tensions everywhere. We were still quite fresh from a Cuban Missile Crisis, which happened only 15 to 20 years ago.
“It’s a tumultuous period, but when you look back on it now you’re like, ‘Oh yeah. Top pistol. Cocaine!’ Like, “No!” It was really scary.’
With that in mind, the Deadpool star suggested that when we look back on 2026 and this era, we would pick the “big ticket items that culturally didn’t really leave the footprint that we thought they would have.”
Explaining that many of the things felt like a mix from decades before, while the previous decade was their “own thing,” he predicted that the “COVID era” would be viewed with rose-tinted glasses.
“We’re living in the damn salad days. We just don’t know!’ he exclaimed.
The comments were enough to rile reality star Pratt.
Despite the outpouring of support from some of Hollywood’s biggest stars this year, it wasn’t enough to give Pratt a win in LA’s mayoral race in June. But his comments on social media Thursday showed he still has plans for the city.
“Here I am trying to bring back American film jobs and then these tools keep saying stupid shit like this and making every normal American hate them,” Pratt wrote on X.
“Just stick to the Cricket wireless ads,” Pratt wrote of Reynolds, who owns a 25% stake in Mint Mobile
“Hollywood is seriously its own worst enemy. Just stick to the wireless Cricket ads, dude.”
Reynolds has a 25% stake in Mint Mobile and appears in their commercials.
When Pratt lost, President Trump reiterated his criticism of the Los Angeles mayoral primary in a Truth Social post.
“There’s no way Spencer Pratt could have lost the runoffs in LA after the big lead he had. 3rd World Nation. Rigged elections!’ Trump wrote.
Last year, the family of Pratt and his wife Heidi Montag suffered a devastating blow when their home was one of thousands destroyed by the most devastating Los Angeles fire in history.
Outraged by the government’s response to the natural disaster, Pratt announced his plan to run for mayor on the one-year anniversary of the fires.
They are both no strangers to Hollywood. They both appeared on MTV’s The Hills and Celebrity Big Brother, among others.
