In the world’s largest student house, a naval academy building with 4,600 beds and its own zip code

Bancroft Hall at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, is named after former Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, but to the midshipmen who call the dormitory home, it is affectionately known as “Mother B.”

The largest student dormitory in the world, Bancroft Hall houses approximately 4,400 midshipmen during their four years of study at the elite military academy.

The center section and first two wings of Bancroft Hall, designed by Ernest Flagg, a Beaux-Arts architect known for his grand, classical designs, were completed in 1908. The dormitory was expanded in 1921, 1941, and 1961 and now boasts eight wings.

The massive 1.4 million square foot complex houses 1,639 dormitories and 4,663 beds, and contains 33 acres of floor space and 7.8 miles of corridors, which midshipmen refer to by their maritime term “passages.” The dormitory is so large that the internal post office uses the unique zip code 21412.

Incoming freshmen, known as “plebes,” march into Bancroft Hall through the center doors after their oath of office ceremony on Induction daythe first official day of Plebe Summer before the academic year begins. From then on, midshipmen will not be allowed to walk through the center doors until after graduation. (Civilians, officers, and non-midshipmen may use the center doors.)

The front doors of Bancroft Hall open into a decorative rotunda open to visitors. Memorial Hall, a space honoring fallen alumni of the US Naval Academy, is publicly accessible via the stairs in the rotunda.

Bancroft Hall also features student services including gyms, a uniform shop, a bookstore, a tailor, a cobbler, laundry rooms, and dental and medical facilities.

The larger Bancroft Hall complex also includes Mitscher Hall, located in the courtyard, which houses an auditorium and a small chapel. The Levy Center at Mitscher Hall includes a synagogue, meeting rooms and the Honor Court, a midshipman-led body that investigates alleged violations of the USNA Honor Concept.

Midshipmen keep their dormitories tidy

Attending the US Naval Academy requires adhering to strict rules, including in the dormitories. Uniforms and shoes should be stored from light to dark, and beds should be neatly made every day with hospital corners. The rooms are also regularly inspected.

The rooms, which can accommodate at least two people, are of the same gender. Each room has a double bed above a desk, a wardrobe, storage space and a private shower and sink. Communal toilets are located in the halls. The dormitory is mixed. As of 2024, the student population consisted of approximately 70% men and 30% women.

The housing assignments are organized by the approximately 150-person companies where midshipmen are placed upon arrival. The companies also eat and study together, competing each semester for points that earn special awards.

Meals are served indoors King Hallwhich was completed in 1953 and is located in Bancroft Hall. At breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Naval Academy serves 4,500 meals simultaneously in less than 10 minutes – enough for virtually every midshipman to eat at the same time. In total it serves 13,500 meals per day.

In addition to housing all students, Bancroft Hall’s most important role, U.S. Naval Academy Lt. Commander Kara Handley said, is to shape future leaders.

“For more than 120 years, the U.S. Naval Academy has been building warfighters behind the doors of Bancroft Hall,” Handley said. “Bancroft Hall acts as the structural heart of the Yard and not only houses the Brigade of Midshipmen as the largest dormitory complex in the world, but also provides a training ground to strengthen military discipline, unit cohesion, high standards and accountability.”
