The VAR protocol was broken during Real Madrid’s dramatic Champions League win against Bayern Munich.

Los Blancos came from behind with two late goals from Joselu, winning 2-1 on the night and reaching the Champions League final with a 4-3 aggregate victory.

There had been a time when it looked like Bayern would force an all-German final at Wembley thanks to a brilliant finish from Alphonso Davies.

Moments later, however, Carlo Ancelotti’s side thought they had scored the equalizer when Nacho aimed the ball towards goal and the ball went in via Matthijs de Ligt.

However, the goal was disallowed and TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher noted that protocol had been breached during a VAR review of the incident.

VAR protocol was ‘broken’ when replays of Nacho Joshua Kimmich’s foul were shown at the Santiago Bernabeu before the referee had officially ruled on the incident

Real Madrid thought they had equalized immediately after Alphonso Davies' opener, but the referee canceled out the goal after ruling Kimmich had made a mistake in the build-up.

VAR checked whether Nacho had fouled Joshua Kimmich during the corner kick that led to the goal.

Replays of the incident were shown on the big screen in the stadium during the review.

TNT commentator Fletcher said: ‘I thought there was some sort of rule against this.’

Football lawmakers IFAB announced last summer that VAR replays would not be allowed to be shown in stadiums until match officials made their decision.

IFAB secretary Lukas Brud told Sky Sports last year that the decision was made to ‘protect referees’.

He said: ‘We want to prevent referees from feeling pressured or influenced by players, managers or fans while they are in the process of making a decision.’

Despite the extra pressure that may have been put on the referee when the replays were shown at the Santiago Bernabeu, he ultimately disallowed the goal.

However, there was late drama when Joselu’s winning goal was awarded by VAR after the on-field offside decision was overturned following review.

Bayern Munich then felt they should have gotten a goal from Matthijs de Ligt, which would have taken them to extra time.

However, the referee had already blown his whistle before the ball hit the net due to an offside decision against Noussair Mazraoui.

Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel said after the match: ‘The linesman said sorry, but that doesn’t help.

‘There are two mistakes. The first big mistake comes from the linesman. He immediately raised his flag; To raise your flag in a situation like this, you have to be very sure that it is offside.

“To have the guts and the balls to raise the flag like this is a huge, huge call, and it’s the wrong decision. We got the shot off in five seconds [of the flag] and the referee has the opportunity not to blow the whistle, but he blows the whistle. It’s against every rule.’
