Angela Scanlon isn’t afraid to push the boundaries when it comes to her incredible wardrobe full of bold colors and stylish fits.
The Irish presenter, 42, has become a social media sensation with more than 500,000 followers on Instagram and co-hosts her female empowerment podcast Get A Grip with friend Vicky Pattison.
And her social media series, Things I Love That My Husband Hates, unexpectedly went viral after she started showing off items from her fabulous, crazy wardrobe that didn’t sit well with her husband, Roy Horgan.
Speaking to the Daily Mail ahead of the launch of her second podcast Gift List – with Louis Theroux as the first guest – Angela revealed how she uses her style as an “act of defiance” to “go against expectations” after making the decision that she wants to do things her way.
The star, who started her career as a stylist, later moved into more serious journalism and documentaries, but reveals she decided to quit when she started presenting her own chat show.
“I think sometimes you get a job or you sit in a certain chair and you’re almost cosplaying as you think you should look,” she said.

‘And I think I did that for a while where I thought, “Oh, this is what I’m supposed to look like when I’m sitting on the couch interviewing people. This is what you’re supposed to wear in this role.”
“So I probably buttoned up a bit and wore things that maybe felt a little bit more secure, but a little less so for me, and then I did a chat show in Ireland. We made it into three series and I was completely into it.’
‘I think in the past there was sometimes a feeling among women in business that if you wanted to compete as a woman in business, you had to act like a man. To be taken seriously, you have to wear a suit.
“You have to do all those things and so I think my desire is to do it in a way that suits me and that is true to me and that maybe goes against expectations and norms, in the hope that maybe it will allow other people to do the same, whatever world they exist in.”
She joked, “I mean, it’s not that deep, but if it was that deep, I’d say, yeah, it’s kind of defiant. Like I don’t like being told what to do.
‘I certainly don’t like being told what to wear, and I literally find myself a little nervous when I feel like someone is trying to shape me. And so I think my clothes are a very outward expression of that desire to be myself, take it or leave it.”
Explaining how she navigates her online image and the message she sends, she said, “I want it to be an honest reflection, but it’s also social media, and it’s actually not real life in many ways.
‘I think the guy hates shows I’ve done, which was quite a coincidence. It was kind of a desire for me to say, ‘Honey, if someone tells me not to wear something, as far as I’m concerned, that’s a reason to wear it.’
“And that went viral, and I thought I was being quite specific in my strange style, and what I realized was that people were saying, “Oh my God, yes, I have this amazing dress that I bought because I loved it and I gave myself something amazing and now I suddenly feel like I shouldn’t wear it, or that it’s too much, or that I’m too much.”

‘I think the choices we make often come from a fear of what people will think, what they will say to us, or how they will see us.
“And I actually hope that by turning off my weirdness a lot of the time, other people will feel free to express their own things.”

In a series of hilarious confessions, Louis admits he once (accidentally) tried to take a silver spoon from Joan Collins at her birthday party, but was caught red-handed by the star’s sister-in-law.
He further reveals that his gift-giving skills were once completely overshadowed by none other than movie legend Tom Cruise, after the actor sent his grandmother 100 cupcakes to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Angela added: “I was so excited to take part. I mean, having Louis Theroux as the first guest was an absolute treat.
‘What we have been able to do is collect stories that you may not know yet, from faces that you think you know very well.’
The new six-episode series will be released every three weeks, with a new guest for each installment.
