The birds are known for their elongated toes and nails that allow them to walk over floating vegetation in shallow water.
For this, the birds have also been nicknamed ‘Jesus Bird’ because they appear to walk on water.
They feed on small insects and invertebrates that inhabit the ponds where they usually live.
Female jacanas are polyandrous, meaning a single female mates with and maintains a harem of multiple males.
Males typically handle the majority of child-rearing tasks, including building the nest, incubating the eggs and raising the chicks.
