A pregnant Milwaukee bus driver managed to save 37 children from a bus fire seconds before the vehicle caught fire.

Expectant mother Imunek Williams was on her two-hour drive to the Milwaukee Academy of Science on Wednesday when smoke began to fill the bus.

“I started to smell something funny at the stop light and I just thought it was normal smoke coming from another car,” Williams said. WISN in an interview.

“But as I started riding more, the smell and the smoke started to get thicker.

“I just said to the kids, let’s get out. I evacuated the bus, got everyone out and lined them up against a fence.

Dramatic footage captured at the scene shows the large school bus completely engulfed in flames with thick white smoke billowing from the windows.

Firefighters were on the scene and the Milwaukee Police Department said they would investigate how the fire started

Williams, who is expecting a boy, added: ‘It feels good to see the kids this morning and have them thank me, the school thanking me.

“As soon as we got off the bus, I turned around and the bus was just on fire.”

In a statement, Milwaukee police said they would investigate how the fire started.

They said, ‘A bus started smoking and caught fire. The driver and passengers were all able to get out.

Photos taken after the fire was extinguished show the charred remains of the vehicle.

Williams was taken to hospital as a precaution, but both she and her baby are doing well

‘No one was hurt; however, the driver was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.

‘The cause of the fire is under investigation; does not seem suspicious at the moment, however.’

According to TODAYWilliams is now doing well, but she did suffer smoke inhalation from the incident.
