Jack Grealish questions penalty decision in Manchester City’s FA Cup final win

‘I’m not even LOOKING at the ball!’: Jack Grealish was baffled by the penalty decision against him and Manchester City in their 2-1 FA Cup final win over Man United – as he jokes Ilkay Gundogan ‘saved him’ with brace

  • Manchester City won the FA Cup by beating United 2-0 on Saturday
  • They won 2–1 after Erik ten Hag’s side scored a controversially awarded penalty
  • Jack Grealish was baffled by how the penalty was awarded following City’s win

Jack Grealish has questioned the decision to award Manchester United a penalty after he was ruled to have provided the ball during Man City’s 2-1 FA Cup final.

The England star claimed he ‘didn’t even look at the ball’ when he flicked his hand after missing a header.

“I don’t know how it’s a penalty,” Grealish told BBC Sport, “I’m not even looking at the ball, I missed the ball with my head, but anyway Gundo saved me.”

Alan Shearer agreed, asking what the 27-year-old could have done instead, while Lee Dixon felt the officials had ‘never kicked a ball in their life’.

Bruno Fernandes converted the penalty kick to tie the game, but Ilkay Gundogan scored his second of the afternoon to put the Cityzens ahead again.

It came after the German midfielder scored the fastest goal in FA Cup final history with a stylish volley after just 12 seconds.

Speaking of the derby victory, which will see City stay on course for a famous treble with the Premier League also in the bag and only the Champions League final left next weekend, Grealish added: “IIt’s just things you dream about when you’re young.

“I don’t know if the foreign guys do as much, but we English guys know how important it is. I lost one with Villa and I really wanted to win this one.’

For the City side, he joined two years ago for £100 million, he added: The best thing about this team is that we have a mix of everything.

“The older guys have more experience, we have younger guys and we have so much faith in ourselves.

Ilkay Gundogan then scored his second of the game to ensure City can still reach the treble by beating Inter Milan in next weekend’s Champions League final

“We’ll enjoy tonight and go straight back to it tomorrow and Monday for a huge game next week.”

“I can’t wait for next week already, I love this team, the players and the staff.”

The loss will be a crushing one for United as it not only ends their hopes of a second trophy this season, but also gives their rivals a chance to emulate their greatest achievement.

The Red Devils’ treble victory in 1999 has never been equaled in English football, but City are now just one win away.
