Helen Mirren has insisted everyone should be ‘free to screw it up’ as she addresses reports about her MobLand co-star Tom Hardyis on set drama.
The British acting icon is back as the devious Maeve Harrigan for the second series Guy Ritchie and Ronan Bennett’s gangster series, premiering September 18 on Paramount+.
Although there are many furious clashes seen on screen, reports of major tensions between Tom and the production during filming led to him leaving the show.
It has since been reported that the actor and producers Jez Butterworth and David Glasser are working through their creative differences in time to start filming series three.
Meanwhile, Dame Helen has doubled down on her defense of Tom, having previously expressed her support for her co-star via a ‘Love you now and forever’ Instagram post and publicly stating she would work with him again in a heartbeat.
“You learn certain things as you get older,” she mused Radio times. ‘Basically about how to work with people.’

Although there are many angry clashes seen on screen, reports of major tensions between Tom and production during filming reportedly led to him leaving the show.
She admitted that she certainly hasn’t become more forgiving of people, but added: ‘What you learn is that every person is different; every person has their own way of doing things.’
“There’s not one way, there’s a million different ways.”
“What you want is what’s on the screen or on stage that’s great. And the only way to do that is for everyone to feel like they can be free to create, explore, experiment and screw up,” adding that she herself has “messed up endlessly.”
The star, who reprises her leading role in MobLand alongside Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, Lara Pulver, Mandeep Dhillon and Teddie Allen, said she enjoys working in an ensemble situation, and that MobLand is very ensemble. I like it very much.’
Hardy’s dismissal from MobLand was first reported in the May Puck newsletter. The report blamed ‘clashes with producers Jez Butterworth and David Glasser, among others’ during production of season two.
Just as season two is set to hit screens, season three will go into production this fall, leaving production in a precarious situation.
It has been reported that his character Harry, a fixer working for the Harrigan crime family led by Conrad (Brosnan) and his wife Maeve (Mirren), was not written out at the end of series two.

Weeks after reports of his departure, a source close to production told Variety that “Tom has not been fired, the door is not closed on season three and things are being worked on creatively.”
The show’s executive producer and director, Guy Ritchie, is said to have had a hand in leading the conversations between Hardy and other producers, as he “loves working with Tom.”
The Mail On Sunday, meanwhile, revealed bosses have been surprised by the huge response from viewers to reports of Tom’s departure.
A source said: ‘Tom is a star, the public love him but the bosses have underestimated that. They didn’t realize the reaction they would get. It was extraordinary, the vibe they get is that there is no MobLand if there is no Tom.
‘The whole story has changed: from the belief that they can continue without him, to a huge crisis. They needed this to realize how loved Tom is by the viewers.’
Hardy is said to be determined not to work after the end of this year as he and his wife, actress Charlotte Riley, 44, plan to take a number of years off to spend with their two children, aged 11 and six.
Hardy is said to have been furious as production was continually postponed due to script writing delays, jeopardizing his family plans.
