Dolly Parton’s devastated sister Stella has revealed that the iconic singer kept her cancer diagnosis a secret from many of her relationships.
Parton died on August 25 at the age of 80 after months of mysterious health problems caused her to withdraw from a series of public appearances, fueling fans’ fears for her well-being.
It was then revealed that the country’s queen had been privately battling cancer, although the specific strain was not made public.
Now Stella, 77, has shed light on her sister’s decision to opt for discretion when it comes to her health concerns, speaking to Gayle King on CBS mornings.
She explained that Dolly “didn’t want anyone to tell her audience because Dolly couldn’t tolerate negative things and she didn’t want her fans to worry about that.”
Parton also “didn’t want a lot of family to worry about it,” Stella said, noting that “some of us knew, those of us who were closer,” but “not every family member.”

Stella insisted that Parton “didn’t want people to be sad and she didn’t want people to worry.” She would be very happy and excited that people showed her so much love because she knew it would make us feel better as a family.”
The bottom line was that Parton’s family — as well as that of her late husband Carl Dean and “probably” her best friend and assistant Judy Ogle — “are the people she would want to say, ‘Well, see? Everything I did, they cared. They really loved me!’
Parton died four days after being admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, according to a report in TMZ.
Her loved ones started running to Nashville when they heard the news of her hospitalization, but not everyone was able to reach her while she was still alive.
The Jolene singer’s death was confirmed the day it occurred in an Instagram video posted by her cousin Bryan Seaver, who also acted as her head of security.
“This video announcement is something that Dolly asked of me years ago before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” Seaver said.
He praised his aunt for “living in the light” and said she was now “in the arms of Jesus” and in the company of her late husband Carl Dean, as well as her parents and “countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in heaven.”
Three days after her death, an intimate group of loved ones, including Seaver, were seen gathering at her cemetery, Woodlawn Memorial Park and Nashville Mausoleum.
Seaver had previously revealed that Parton would be buried in high heels in the same mausoleum where the remains of her husband of more than half a century are buried.
While it was initially unclear whether Parton was buried at that event, her niece later confirmed that the singer was “laid to rest” at some point that day.
In his Instagram video announcing her passing, Seaver relayed Parton’s wish “to rest in a beautiful plush cotton bed, because after a lifetime of carrying heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to get comfortable and have some rest.”
Dean died at the age of 82 from causes that remained private in March 2025, two months before what would have been his and Parton’s 59th wedding anniversary.
Parton enjoyed an illustrious music career spanning six decades and was perhaps best known for her hits Jolene and 9 to 5.
Parton, the fourth of twelve children, six of whom are still living, was born in Pittman Center, Tennessee, on January 19, 1946, and grew up in the Great Smoky Mountains.
In an interview published just four days before her death, Parton had stated that she still had “so many things I want to accomplish” and vowed to “keep working as long as I can to see everything come to life,” via People.
She explained that she was struggling with “some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl.”
In late September 2025, Parton addressed fans’ concerns by announcing that unspecified “health issues” had forced her to postpone her Las Vegas residency from December to September 2026.
She shared the news directly with fans on Instagram, explaining that she had to undergo several procedures due to her medical issues.
Then, in early October last year, Parton’s younger sister Freida struck fear into the hearts of fans by begging them to pray for the country icon.
“Last night I was up all night praying for my sister Dolly,” Frieda wrote on Facebook on October 7, 2025. “Many of you know she hasn’t been feeling her best lately. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I have been moved to ask all the loving world to be prayer warriors and pray with me.”
As panic mounted, Freida stood back, trying to convince the audience that her sister was “a little confused,” but that she never intended “to make it sound so serious,” and only made her request out of faith in “the power of prayer.”
Parton then posted a video of herself in hair, makeup and costume during a commercial shoot for the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to console her fans.
“Do I look sick?” she asked cheerfully, adding, “I appreciate your prayers, because I’m a religious person, I can always use the prayers for anything, but I just want you to know that I’m doing well!”
