Corbetts Cross CRASHES into a fence at the last hurdle in the Albert Bartlett at the Cheltenham Festival, allowing Stay Away Fay to claim victory with jockey and horse, thankfully avoiding serious injury.
Market favorite Corbetts Cross narrowly avoided serious injury in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival when he veered sharply off course and crashed into the outer posts of the final fence, dismounting jockey Mark Walsh.
Going well as the horses entered the home stretch, Corbetts Cross seemed to be traveling cleverly with Stay Away Fay ahead of him by a few lengths.
However, approaching the final fence from a tight angle from the inside rail, Corbetts Cross opted to try and go around the obstacle and as such crashed into the inside fence.
With plastic fencing these days, both horse and jockey thankfully avoided serious injury, but it was an indication of the perils and dangers of national hunt racing.
Walsh fell off his mount and appeared to be in some pain, though he got up quickly off the ground, though he was holding his arm as he chatted with the owner and trainer after the race.
The favorite Corbetts Cross crashed into the fence at the last hurdle as the horses charged for the final post.
Fortunately, the accident did not leave the horse or jockey seriously injured.
The crash gave Stay Away Fay, a 20-1 shot, a chance to win by a few lengths under little pressure.
Walsh was due to ride Minella Indo in the Gold Cup at 3:30, but was replaced by Nico de Boinville.
