A luxury handbag can complete a look, but could your spine be quietly paying the ultimate price?
While many of us can’t leave the house without a bag slung over our shoulder, experts warn that straining or wearing the wrong style for your body can put serious strain on your body and cause a range of posture problems.
Dr. Sherry McAllister is a doctor of chiropractic and president of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress.
She warns that carrying heavy bags over one shoulder or dangling from the forearm forces the body into unnatural positions, which can lead to permanent physical damage and pain.
“A handbag adds an external burden to your body,” she says. ‘When that load hangs on one shoulder or one hand, the body subtly adapts: a raised shoulder here, a shifted trunk there, a gentle rotation through the pelvis.
‘These are normal short-term adjustments, not evidence of an afternoon with a tote bag ruined your attitude. But heavier weight, longer wearing time and repetitive asymmetry increase the physical strain on your body.’
Chiropractors warn that carrying heavy bags for long periods of time can cause permanent physical damage and pain.
Dr. McAllister says studies involving young adults found that even a Bag of 2.7 kilograms changed torso positioning.
She says: ‘One shoulder carrying has increased the thoracic curve, while cross body carrying has increased both the curvature of the upper back and the sway of the lower back. Researchers also noted shifts in scapula position, shoulder symmetry, and pelvic rotation.”
Another study compared backpacks, shoulder bags and handbags of the same weight. The handbag created the greatest compressive force through the muscles that supported the spine. The backpack created the lowest load because it distributes the load symmetrically – when worn correctly with both straps.
But Dr. McAllister says you don’t have to sacrifice luxury style to save your back, and certain celebrities are already paving the way with ergonomically sound choices.
Kendall Jenner: Sleek and centered
Kendall Jenner is often spotted wearing sleek, structured crossbody bags from high-end labels like The Row and Bottega Veneta.
Kendall Jenner typically carries structured crossbody bags from luxury brands.
Dr. McAllister says: ‘She wears them high and close to her body – a smart, hands-free style that allows a natural arm swing while keeping her shoulders perfectly level. Her minimal street style proves that a centered bag can increase comfort and freedom of movement without sacrificing fashion.”
Harry Styles: gender-free practicality
Harry Styles regularly favors structured handbags and crossbody silhouettes, including his iconic Gucci Jackie 1961, carried neatly next to him.
‘Harry’s functional fashion emphasizes how hands-free styles suit everyone. By centering the load, it avoids the awkward torso rotation and uneven muscle recruitment caused by heavy briefcases or bulky wallets stuffed into back pockets.”

Dr. McAllister says chiropractors recommend protecting your posture by starting with the lightest bag that fits your daily schedule.
‘A compact silhouette naturally prevents you from packing too much just in case.’
Crossbody bags feel secure, but the strap is important. Choose a wider strap, keep the bag close to your body and don’t let it swing low, which can interfere with walking and increase pressure on the lower back. For containers and bags with a top handle: lighten the contents and change sides regularly.
“Every now and then, especially when you start to feel the strain, empty your purse into a plastic bag and place it on a scale. The number you see may shock you and explain why your commute feels harder than it should.
“Cosmetics, chargers, water bottles, wallets, keys, books, laptops, and snacks all add extra strain, and your body bears every ounce.”
Dr. McAllister says this daily stress can manifest itself in the form of recurring neck, shoulder or lower back pain, tingling, belt marks or the feeling of being forced to lean or change your gait.
Daily stress can cause recurring neck, shoulder and lower back problems.
If you recognize these symptoms, she says seeing a specialist can help address the problem before it becomes a long-term problem.
“A chiropractic doctor can assess movement posture, joint function, muscle balance, and everyday habits that contribute to discomfort,” she says. “Care may include individualized exercises, ergonomic changes, and alignment of structure and function.”
Instead of demanding that you give up your favorite designer bag, a chiropractor can help you tailor your choices to your daily life.
“Rather than asking you to throw away your handbag, a chiropractor can help you choose a different style that better suits your daily needs and give you advice on how to best balance fashion and function,” she says.
‘That is the adapted reality way of life. Pay attention to what your body is telling you before a small daily stressor becomes a bigger limitation. Your bag should carry your essentials, and your body should carry the beauty of your fashion choices.”
