Andrew Garfield has been mocked after telling billionaires to be ‘afraid’ of his upcoming new film titled The Uprising.
The 43-year-old actor, who recently puts on a fun exhibition with friend Monica Barbaro in NYCmade the comments while attending a discussion about the historical action drama at The Grove in Los Angeles on Thursday.
The film, which will hit U.S. theaters on September 10, follows the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 in England.
At one point, Garfield was asked what he hoped audiences take away from the project, per The film report.
As part of his response, the star said: “I hope when billionaires watch it they are less scared.”

Others gave their reaction to Garfield’s comment, as Tablet Magazine Chief Technology Officer Noam Blum wrote on X: “More billionaires were involved in making this than will probably ever watch it.”
Columnist John William Sherrod also wrote, “Hilarious that world-famous multi-millionaire Andrew Garfield is cosplaying as a despicable member of the working class.”

Garfield has a net worth of approximately $16 million as of 2026, according to the report Net Worth of Celebrities.
The British-born star began to gain wider on-screen recognition after taking on roles in films such as Never Let Me Go (2010). That same year, he teamed with Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network, which had a budget of $40 million.

Both films grossed approximately $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office.
Garfield starred in other big budget productions such as Hacksaw Ridge (2016), directed by Mel Gibson and which grossed approximately $180 million at the box office.
He played the role of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, in the film Artificial, which will be released in theaters in late 2026. The project had a budget of $40 million.
The Uprising stars Garfield as the character of Plowman and also stars Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie and Jonny Lee Miller.
The film is “based on the true story of the rebellion that inspired the legend of Robin Hood,” with Garfield’s character becoming the “leader of a rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II in a fight for justice.” IMDB.
Elsewhere during his discussion at the LA event on Thursday, the actor said he hoped the film “sinks.”
“I hope there is some awakening that people feel… that we all feel that our own struggles are reflected in the struggles of these characters from a distant time and place and that it can be guiding.”

During a recent interview with TermGarfield opened up about wanting to be part of the project after reading the script.
“I felt really passionate about it and I felt really touched by it in a very, very deep, deep place.”
The star added that “it felt like a kind of antidote to disenfranchisement and a kind of isolation and a fear and a realization that the world is spiraling out of control.”
‘That injustices large and small are happening all the time in our world and that there seems to be no accountability.’
He explained that he got up every day, “just like the rest of us, and asked, ‘Are the people I want to be held accountable for being held accountable today? No.’
“Every day, every morning, it was a repeated rage. And I read this and I thought, here’s an answer to that.’
Garfield continued that the film “feels like a good place to put our energy, our artistry, and our desire to put the world to rights.”
