Andrew Garfield has transformed himself into the controversial CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman in Luca Guadagnino’s Altman biopic, Artificial.
The first trailer for the highly anticipated project dropped on Tuesday, with the plot focusing on Altman’s firing and rehiring in 2023.
Fans are already divided by the trailer, with one writing, “No one asked for a Sam Altman biopic. Dude got fired for 5 days and they made a whole Oscar bait movie about it. We live in hell.’
Another commented: ‘They need to use AI to make Andrew Garfield’s head twice the size so he can look more like Sam Altman.”
Other fans said Garfield famously played Eduardo Saverin in the Mark Zuckerberg biopic, The Social Network.
‘Bro can star in a biopic about both Facebook and Open AI,” wrote one.

Artificial has had a rough production run after being dropped by distributor Amazon MGM Studios just days after Amazon signed a $50 billion deal with OpenAI.
Producers then spent months shopping Artificial around to various distributors.
NetflixA24, Warner Bros and more have reportedly passed on Artificial, according to the New York Timesuntil it was eventually acquired by Neon.
Garfield will also star in the action film The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood, which hits theaters this weekend.
The film follows the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 in England.
During a post-screening Q&A with director Paul Greengrass at The Grove last week, the 43-year-old was asked what he hopes audiences take away from the project.
As part of his response, the star said: “I hope when billionaires watch it they are less scared.”

Garfield quickly received backlash on social media, with former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt taking to X to call out the actor’s multi-million dollar salary.
“You mean… like the billionaires who greenlight your movies and take all your multi-million dollar salaries? Or are they good?’ Pratt wrote.
The Hills alum continued, “Ironically, Garfield just got paid $5 million to play billionaire Sam Altman in Artificial.”
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Garfield has a reported net worth of approximately $16 million as of 2026.
The British-American actor continued to gain on-screen recognition after taking on roles in films such as Never Let Me Go (2010). That same year, he worked with Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network.
Garfield later portrayed the character of Spider-Man in Marc Webb’s 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man.
