A 42-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man have been arrested by counter-terrorism police. London on suspicion of aiding Iran‘s intelligence service.
Wednesday’s arrests followed two searches carried out on June 24 at addresses in north and north-west London. Metropolitan Police said.
A third home in north-west London was also searched yesterday following the couple’s arrest under the National Security Act (NSA).
The woman was arrested at an address in North London, while the man was arrested at an address in North West London, both on suspicion of a criminal offense under Section 3 of the National Security Act, 2023 – assisting a foreign intelligence agency.
They were taken to a police station in London and have been released on bail under strict conditions until the end of October.
Police said the investigation is not linked to attacks on buildings and locations linked to Jewish and Iranian communities in London.
It is also not thought to be associated with any activity or event associated with the period of the Jewish High Holy Days.
Commander Helen FlanaganThe head of Counter Terrorism Policing London said: ‘We know that news of these arrests will be of concern to some members of the public, but I would like to emphasize that we do not believe there is any immediate threat to the wider public in relation to this case.
“We have seen a marked increase in the pace of our work on national security and state threats over the past year and this investigation is a continuation of that.
‘As we have shown here, we will not hesitate to take action if we suspect that any activity could endanger the safety of Britain or the public.
“I would also like to remind the public that the overall level of terrorist threat is serious, so we continue to ask for everyone’s support in being vigilant. If you see or hear something that doesn’t look right, please trust your instincts and report it to us.’
