The music stopped, the lights stayed on and Lionel Richie’s concert in St. Paul took a terrifying turn as confusion swept through the venue.
Nearly an hour after the 77-year-old superstar abruptly disappeared from the stage during Dancing on the Ceiling, his saxophonist Dino Soldo broke the silence with a chilling announcement: “He can’t go on anymore.”
Richie had already abruptly halted his Sing A Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire after telling the crowd he was feeling “dizzy” – before paramedics met him backstage and rushed him to a hospital.
June’s scare was never fully explained, but just two months later the beloved star raised new alarms when he appeared to have trouble standing and breathing during the performance of All Night Long in St. Louis.
He was later admitted to intensive care and underwent tests for heart problems. He spent four days in a hospital, leaving fans fearful that the legendary singer might finally be approaching his final encore.
But the deepest fears are said to be felt within his own family, with an insider claiming his three children are ‘crazy scared they could lose him’ – and that his daughters, Nicole, 44, and Sofia, 28, have become ‘like mothers to him’ in a heartbreaking reversal of roles.

The source said the two sisters and their brother Miles, 32, are “worried he could develop serious heart problems.”
Another insider echoed this sentiment to the Daily Mail, adding, “His kids are always looking to fend for themselves.”
They added that Richie is now back home and “in love” with his family, although he remains optimistic, “feeling good” and in his “usual jovial mood.”
Nicole, who adopted Richie with his first wife Brenda Harvey, and Sofia, whom he shares with his second wife Diane Alexander, both “take time to help dad” despite their busy schedules, careers and young families.

Their brother Miles, who Richie also shares with Alexander, is said to share their concerns with all three siblings who cannot imagine life without the father they consider the “glue of the family.”
According to the source, he regularly hosts “family dinners at his mansion in LA or brunches at the Beverly Hills Hotel.”
But balancing those precious family occasions with his relentless career — including his current tour and a demanding judging role on American Idol — has become a growing concern.
“They were worried Lionel was working too hard with this new tour coming on the heels of eight seasons of American Idol, which is super demanding work,” the source explains.
Their concern is shared by Richie’s longtime American Idol co-star Luke Bryan. “Luke has called many times to check on him and tell him to take a break,” the source said. “Luke is a very down-to-earth man and has reminded Lionel that family, not work, comes first.”
Richie joined ABC’s revival of the show in 2018 as a judge, alongside Katy Perry and Bryan, and has reportedly earned around $10 million per season.
And the heavy workload of a reality show would strain even the most seasoned entertainer.
Even Jennifer Lopez admitted that American Idol was too demanding to balance with her other commitments, eventually leaving the show after two seasons.

Richie, on the other hand, has continued to embrace the punishment schedule. But that relentless drive isn’t exactly new.
Richie first rose to fame as a member of the Commodores before becoming one of the biggest solo stars of the 1980s, with global hits such as Hello, All Night Long, Dancing on the Ceiling and Say You, Say Me.
His work has earned him Grammy Awards and an Oscar. He also co-wrote 1985’s We Are the World, the all-star charity single that became one of the defining songs of its time.
So why, as he approaches 80, does he continue to take on so much instead of thinking about retirement?
According to Daily Mail insiders, the answer is twofold: Richie is “addicted” to the spotlight and to the work itself.
“Lionel likes to keep busy, he can’t sit still and loves his career momentum,” the first source said.
They put it even more bluntly: “He’s risking his health by working super hard, even though he’s 77. Working is like an addiction for him and he refuses to retire.”
And they emphasized that his decision to keep working isn’t about the salary.
“He has tons of money, he’s worth over $200 million, so that’s not the problem,” the source added. “The problem is he likes to be popular, in the news.”
His loved ones, of course, would “like him to slow down,” but they know that “Lionel will be Lionel” – and he will keep doing shows as long as he can stand.
“He still loves touring and performing, and he wants to continue doing that for a long time,” the second insider added.

Richie has generally enjoyed good health throughout his extremely long career, although he revealed in 2025 that he had been diagnosed with ADHD.
However, his recent concert emergencies aren’t the first time he’s faced serious health issues.
In the early 1990s, the Stuck on You singer underwent four surgeries to treat an unknown condition in his throat.
Looking back on the ordeal in 2022, Richie shared People that the mysterious illness had taken a serious toll on his mental health.
“About as close as you’d ever get to a nervous breakdown,” he said of the period and his anxiety surrounding the procedures. “You don’t want anyone walking around down there. This is your identity.’
“I never really thought it would end,” he added.
Doctors eventually attributed the problem to acid reflux, caused by the late dinner Richie ate before bed. After treating the underlying cause rather than continuing to operate on his throat, he made a full recovery.
But after recent concert fiascos, the singer is forced to take a closer look at his health.

“Lionel has always been the type to put things off and think he is virtually indestructible,” a source told the Daily Mail. ‘But now he really listens to his body. Especially after what happened on tour a few weeks ago, he wants to make sure he’s okay.”
“If something doesn’t feel right or doesn’t seem right, he’ll have it checked out,” she added. “He wants to make sure it’s nothing serious, and if it is, that it gets fixed.”
And Richie has a growing family, which gives him even more reason to take his health seriously.
His children no longer regard him merely as their father; they raise their own families, making him the grandfather of four grandchildren.
Nicole has been married to Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden since 2010 and they share two children: 18-year-old Harlow and 16-year-old Sparrow.
Sofia married music director Elliot Grainge in 2023, and the couple have two young children: two-year-old Eloise and five-month-old Henry.
“Lionel is finally taking control of his health and making sure he does everything he can to be around, healthy and performing for the people he loves for many years to come,” the second source said.
“And of course to be there for his family and children and grandchildren.”
For now, Richie is “really keen to get back on tour,” but his team will continue to monitor him after the holiday weekend before deciding if he is fit to return.
If he’s healthy and in good shape in about two weeks, “all systems will be working,” the source said.
