Police are investigating whether the attacker, described locally as a man of North African descent and a known criminal with a history of theft, was under the influence of drink or drugs.
The series of attacks took place yesterday morning at Camp de l’Arpa station on line five of the Barcelona metro.
The station is named after the neighborhood of the same name in the Sant Marti district, bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
Mossos d’Esquadra regional police are also investigating the possibility that he attacked other women on a subway train before walking across the platform and apparently randomly punching and pushing his other female victims.

At least two Good Samaritans are said to have been attacked when they tried to chase him after he attacked the girl wearing headphones.
A police spokesperson confirmed this this morning when she urged other potential victims to come forward.
He said: ‘Last night we arrested a man for attacking several women at Camp de l’Arpa metro station in Barcelona.
‘We are investigating whether more women have been attacked.
‘If you have been a victim, report it to a police station.’
