Top club Cagliari are said to be ‘concerned’ after 20-year-old French striker Yael Trepy had to be airlifted to hospital following the incident on a day off following their Italian Cup match on Friday.

Reports from the Sardinian newspaper Unione Sarda this morning read: ‘The accident took place in the afternoon, when the young striker lost consciousness.’ It continued that “Trepy performed all necessary tests at the hospital, which fortunately were negative.”

Italian national newspaper La Repubblica says Trepy cannot swim and ended up in the deep end of the pool of a country house in the luxurious Costa Smeralda area.

In a statement released this morning, Cagliari said: ‘Cagliari Calcio announces that the player Yael Trepy is currently hospitalized at the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, where he is in intensive care.

Trepy, who scored once in eight games in his Serie A debut season last season, started Friday’s match against Arezzo and played 54 minutes.

Sardinia-based Cagliari brought Trepy to their youth academy in 2022 and he has risen through the ranks to feature in their first team. He won the Italian equivalent of the FA Youth Cup in 2025, scoring in the final against AC Milan.

Cagliari’s players were given two days off after beating Arezzo 1-0 and will resume training today. The league season starts on Saturday against Parma.

Last season they finished fourteenth in Serie A.
