A woman who stepped in the path of an oncoming train was killed to save a man who fell unconscious on the tracks.
Ashley, who was not publicly identified at the time, earned public praise after saving the 57-year-old man at Redfern Station in Sydney in April 2022.
A family friend revealed in a heartbreaking Instagram post on Saturday that the good Samaritan had died less than a year after the heroic act.
Ashley (pictured right) was praised for her bravery in April last year when she jumped onto the tracks at Redfern train station.
Ashley had risked her own life to pull the man off the tracks after he passed out and fell off the platform at Redfern Station.
Incredible footage of the incident showed Ashley and another woman struggling to help the man off the rails as a train approached them.
Station staff desperately tried to flag the conductor and urgently waved red flags before the train slammed to a stop.
Ashley was the only person who remained on the tracks, along with the injured man. The train stopped a few millimeters from where they were.
Both survived the ordeal at the time, and the man was taken to hospital.
Ashley was praised for her bravery, but her identity remained a mystery until a family friend announced her tragic death over the weekend.
“Sincere condolences to Tommy, his family and friends on the loss of a very young ‘Angel Ashley’,” he wrote on Instagram.
The family friend shared a photo of the couple smiling for the camera.
“She was the young woman who saved the man who fell on the Redfern train tracks,” he wrote.
‘I should have been awarded bravery.’
The man is believed to have passed out in Redfern, with gruesome scenes for many witnesses.
Loved ones left heartfelt tributes in the comments as they shared their condolences.
“It’s a hard and cruel life for many,” wrote one person.

‘Keep that smile on your face… protect a great deal of pain. I love you brother.’
Another said: ‘Sorry for your sad news… a true hero.’
Rox G Molavin, the Sydney traveler who filmed the incident, told Daily Mail Australia at the time that he was thankful the injured man did not die.
“It was a heartbreaking experience,” he said.
‘I wasn’t sure what to do myself…I didn’t know what was going to happen.’
“People were screaming as the train approached, I heard it on the loudspeaker, so I feared the worst.
He said the victim was a “big man” and recalled that it took about six people to help him off the tracks once the vehicle came to a stop.
“It was all very confronting and reminded me of the importance of keeping a safe distance on the platform at all times,” he said.
Police and emergency services arrived shortly after the miraculous escape of the man and woman and helped the elderly man back onto the platform and took him for treatment.
