Princess Mary’s maths teacher dad will not be attending her coronation on January 14 – here’s why

Princess Mary’s maths teacher father will not be in the crowd when she ascends the Danish throne on Monday, January 14.

John Donaldson will attend the historic event – in the comfort of his home in Australia.

The Royal House’s head of communications, Lene Balleby, told local media that the future queen has a good relationship with her 82-year-old father, but that he cannot travel due to his age and health.

This is the second major event Mr Donaldson has had to miss in recent years; the last was Princess Isabella’s confirmation.

‘Unfortunately my father is not coming. He is becoming an older gentleman and he is not doing well making the long journey back to Denmark for confirmation, but he is with us in our hearts,” Crown Princess Mary said at the time.

Mr Donaldson previously fully supported his daughter – in her prominent role at court – and even lived in Denmark for several years with his wife, British author Susan Moody.

He taught at both Aarhus University and the University of Copenhagen and became known for wearing a kilt on special occasions, such as the royal couple’s wedding.

The Crown Princess’s mother, Henrietta Donaldson, died of a heart condition in 1997 when Mary was just 25 years old.

The Australian princess has been described as ‘the real power behind the throne’ and is loved by the Danish people.

She supported Queen Margrethe during her controversial decision to streamline the monarch and strip Prince Joachim’s royal titles.

The prince has revealed he will attend the event, but his wife and children will not.

Mary continued to hold her head high as her ‘fairytale relationship’ with Prince Frederik was called into question after he was spotted on a night out with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova in Spain.
