The Premier League will be accused of racial discrimination in court next month by a former equalities department member.

Kay Badu, who joined the organization in 2022, is taking the organization to an employment tribunal after his departure in December 2022 on the grounds of racial discrimination, retaliation and harassment.

The case will be heard from May 7, but is expected to take several days.

The Premier League opened an official investigation into allegations of internal racism by Badu, but the subsequent investigation, conducted by an independent lawyer, effectively cleared the organization and its employees of discrimination.

Badu, who strongly disagrees with the findings of the Premier League investigation, has launched his own lawsuit, which will be heard in two weeks.

Crucially, CEO Richard Masters will be involved in the proceedings as a witness. This also applies to Catherine Paterson, the Premier League’s people director.

News of the upcoming tribunal comes after the Premier League reached an out-of-court settlement earlier this year with an employee who accused the organization of racial discrimination.

Moloud Ghashghee – an IT technician at the Premier League – opened her own lawsuit alleging race and disability discrimination.

But the dispute was settled just hours before the tribunal was due to begin.

A statement at the time said: ‘As previously reported, a former Premier League employee has made a number of claims against the League which are due to be heard in an employment tribunal.

‘While the Premier League has always rejected these claims, it is now pleased that both parties have been able to resolve these issues without the need for the Tribunal. The Premier League wishes her the best in all her future endeavours.”
