Gary Neville has suggested there will be a ‘real problem’ if England cannot find a place for Phil Foden in their starting XI at the World Cup.

With the tournament less than seven weeks away, fans and pundits alike are discussing what the England starting squad should be for their first game and who should be in the 26-man roster.

A place for discussion seems to be the correct forward position, with many torn between Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka for the starting spot. Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, was adamant it had to be Foden.

“I feel very strongly about the options for the striker,” said the former England fullback.

“I like a lot of those players, but if we can’t find a starting place for Phil Foden in our national team, I think that’s a real problem.

“He is a generational talent. In that sense he is on a different level. That feels more wrong to me than Trent Alexander-Arnold.”

Foden has been a fixture for England since he came on the scene at Manchester City, but he struggled to put together a string of appearances for his country, despite his good form at club level.

That’s one of the reasons Jamie Carragher, also speaking on Sky, suggested that Saka should start in his place, as well as the fact that the Arsenal man would give the Three Lions ‘more balance’.

“A lot of calls for the change of the system are for individual players,” said Carragher.

“You could say Foden is the most talented player. He’s a better player than Saka, but he didn’t do it for England. Saka has done it for England and the balance is better.

“We have a center striker who likes to go deep and Saka makes more insistent runs. I’m just figuring out what suits Harry Kane.’

England boss Gareth Southgate will nominate his team for the tournament later this month, with England’s first game, against Iran, on November 21.
