  • He also allegedly used the videos to blackmail them
  • Revanna is said to have fled to Germany to hide from the law

India is in turmoil after an ally of the country’s prime minister fled to Germany amid allegations he raped or sexually assaulted up to 400 women while filming himself.

Prajwal Revanna, 33, the grandson of a former Indian prime minister, is also alleged to have used the 2,800 videos of the attacks to blackmail his victims. Police are currently investigating the allegations.

Revanna, whose grandfather is HD Deve Gowda, Prime Minister of India for nine months in 1996, heads the Janata Dal (Secular) or JDS, party politically linked to current Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state of Karnataka . South India.

The abuse allegations were made public last week after about 2,000 USB drives containing videos of Revanna’s alleged attacks were left on buses, trains and park benches in Karnataka while the state’s 28 constituencies held elections.

One alleged victim, a former councilor in Bangalore, told local media that Revanna, who ran for a seat in the city of Hassan before fleeing India, had raped her repeatedly.

‘He asked me to take off my clothes, but I denied and said I would scream for help. He then threatened me and said he had a gun.

“He threatened to leak the video to the public if I revealed it to anyone. He used to video call me and ask me to strip. He also raped me several times.’

The leaking man is said to have been a former assistant and driver of Revanna, who reportedly used a diplomatic passport to escape from India.

Modi himself has been accused of doing nothing to punish Revanna, despite being aware of the allegations.

Rahul Gandhi, member of the opposition party Indian National Congress, said that BJP officials were aware of the allegations before they were made public, and told a rally in Karnataka: “This is not a sex scandal but a mass rape. The Prime Minister has supported a mass rapist.

“All the BJP leaders knew that Prajwal Revanna is a mass rapist and they were still associated with him and overtook him in the polls.”

Although Revanna has not directly refuted the allegations, having fled the country after a former maid spoke to police in his home to allege that he had repeatedly raped her, he himself filed a complaint with the police alleging that the videos shared ‘would tarnish his image and’ ‘the minds of poisoned voters’ were ‘manipulated’.

The maid, who has not been named, also alleged that Revanna’s father, HD Revanna, sexually abused her at a farm. He has since been arrested over the allegations.

Revanna’s party has suspended him while police investigate the allegations, while Modi’s party, the BJP, has distanced itself from him.

It said: ‘We have nothing to do with the videos and we have no comment.’
