Olly Murs forced to CANCEL Glasgow concert as his last minute replacement is plucked from Scottish bar and obscurity to open for Take That

Olly Murs had to cancel his opening gig for Take That in Glasgow just minutes before the show started on Friday.

The 39-year-old singer kept fans updated on Instagram throughout the day as his flight from Heathrow was continually delayed before finally being cancelled.

Olly, who will open for the band at the city’s OVO Hydro on three nights, ultimately accepted defeat and was forced to drive all the way to Scotland in time for Saturday and Sunday’s shows.

His last-minute replacement was plucked from a nearby hotel bar and faded into obscurity after being spotted by Scottish presenter Ross King.

Daniel Rooney was performing at the RED Raddison hotel in Glasgow when Ross texted Take That’s Gary Barlow following the news that Olly had been forced to cancel.

When Gary jokingly asked if Ross knew any singers, he recommended Daniel, who was quickly rushed to the arena just 30 minutes beforehand.

Fans loved X’s performance writing: ‘Cambuslang’s Daniel Rooney tore it up in your absence! Loved his performance’: ‘big congratulations to Cambuslang’s Daniel Rooney. Raids on 30 minutes’ notice for Olly Murs who was stuck in London. What a fantastic step to the big stage.’

Meanwhile, a fan said Daily record: ‘Daniel was great, I preferred him to Olly – I hope he grows up.’

Olly told followers in a post: ‘Sorry to everyone at the @takethat show in Glasgow tonight, unfortunately I won’t be there, I was at London Heathrow from 11am this morning for my flight but after several delays (check my Instagram ) and then our flight with @British_Airways was canceled due to an incident with the cabin crew!’.

‘Don’t think I’ve ever missed a gig, I’m so annoyed! But I’m in the car now on the way to our six-hour trip for the show on Saturday and Sunday.”

A stunned Daniel said after his Hydro performance: “It’s hard to take it in, it’s really surreal.”

β€œI just have a chance now to look at my phone and talk to my missus and parents and stuff. It happened quickly – 20 minutes before I went on I met Gary and the boys and we talked about what songs we should do.”

‘It was great, I got some good sing-alongs with the crowd etc and it felt like they were really behind me.

Fans were impressed with Daniel’s performance

He continued: β€œI know some people weren’t happy with Olly but as soon as I went up and had a chat they were brilliant.

β€œRos [King] went up first and announced what was happening. He explained that I was playing in Radisson RED when Gary asked him for help, so he came over and asked me to play the Hydro instead.

“I still had 45 minutes to go in the hotel, but what can you do with something like that, but they are very happy for me.”

Danny then headed back to the hotel to join bandmate John McLaughlin of Johnny Mac and the The Faithful, who rushed to take over his original gig.

And Danny has high hopes that the opportunity will give him a platform to showcase his own songs as an artist in his own right.

‘It’s still early days – it was a great night, but I hope it will help me show people what I can do and what I stand for, with my own music.

“For now, I’m going to go back to the hotel, go see Johnny and try to get everything out of my head.”

Hollywood star Ross was at the Radisson RED Glasgow with friends for the second Friday in a row and was blown away by Danny, who played his regular pre and post Hydro show in the hotel’s downstairs bar.

Ross said: β€œI went to the Radisson with my family and girlfriend for a pre-show meal.

‘Gary and I were texting and I heard Olly was stuck in London. I joked that I would be there for him, but he said, “I’m not kidding, we need you.”

‘I told him I’d just listened to Danny and he was brilliant. Gaz said come on, you’ll both be ready in 30 minutes!

‘Danny was sensational… a star was born! He met the boys before he went on and they waited for him to come away and told him he was brilliant.’

Radisson RED manager Graham Chalmers said: ‘Danny plays for us regularly – working with grassroots artists is huge for us and he’s someone we thought really had something.

β€œIt’s important for us to showcase Scotland’s talent. In fact, we’re opening a new live music venue with that ethos at its core, the Rotunda and Roundhouse opposite the hotel.

He went on to say, β€œSo it was a strange moment when I looked over and saw Danny putting on his jacket and lifting his guitar. I asked him what was going on, but when he told me, how could you get in the way? those kinds of opportunities?

β€œWe are very happy for him and thank Ross for joining us and of course for spotting the kind of talent we have at Radisson RED!”
