The mother of incoming Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate passed away last weekend in a drive-by shooting in Chicago, according to multiple reports.
Ashely Griggs, 40, was shot to death around 2 a.m. Sunday in the Garfield Park neighborhood of the Windy City’s West Side, according to local police.
She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she died of her injuries and was later identified as Tate’s mother.
Four other people, a woman and three men, ages 32 to 42, also suffered injuries in the shooting, though they are said to be in non-life-threatening condition.
Chicago police released information from one of the injured victims who claimed the gunman was “travelling in a vehicle” at the time of the incident.

Tate enrolled at Ohio State last January and is ranked as the third best receiver in the US
Prior to her death, Griggs spoke about her son’s chance to continue playing football at Ohio State – an NCAA Division 1 program that is one of 14 teams in the newly formed Big 12 Conference.
“The wait is finally over,” she tweeted earlier this month when her son’s number 17 jersey for Ohio State first went on sale online.
Tate played for Marist High School in Chicago before moving to Florida to play at IMG Academy for his junior and senior seasons.
He averaged 20.3 yards last year, his last season in high school football, and was eventually ranked 22nd best player by 247Sports in the country.

“He’s just trying to take it day by day,” Tate’s cousin Paul Griggs told NBC Chicago on Monday.

What’s more is that Tate is ranked as the third best wideout in the recruiting class of 247 in 2023. The new freshman enrolled at Ohio State last January.
Griggs’ family said Tate’s mother played a key role in the football star’s rise to college football.
“He’s just trying to take it one day at a time,” said Paul Griggs, the wide receiver’s cousin NBC Chicago on Monday.
“Aware of this terrible tragedy, our coach and coaches are incredibly saddened and they, along with our players, will support Carnell in any way they can during this difficult time,” Ohio State University said in a released statement.
